. ^ Ocean Tests Okay Many Backbay Sites , Tuckahoe Polluted >
By GREG LAWSON CREST HAVEN - Ocean water quality is within acceptable standards, but the county Health Department had to close several sites in the back bays and Tuckahoe River last week because of high fecal coliform bacteria samples. "We closed a lot of back bay areas," said Public Health Coordinator Louis J. La manna. "We haven't had any major, major problems, but they exceeded standards. "We post them routinely, as a matter of procedure," La manna added THE STATE HAS SET a standard of 50 MPN (Mo6t Probable Number) for ocean waters and 200 MPN for back bays. quires two consecutive readings of 200 MF or above to close bathing areas. Lamanna said several areas in the Wildwood back bays were postedswimming, fishing or crabbing. High counts ranged from 540 MPN in Wildwood Canal to 2,400 MPN (the highest possible reading) at Ot ten's Harbor north of the George Redding Bridge. Four Avalon back bay sites tested 350 MPN June 24, but a confirmatory sampling June 27 showed only one area, the public boat ramp opposite 55th Street, to have a high count of 240 MPN. That area was posted, Lamanna said. TWO TRADITIONAL problqpi spots, in Cape May Harbor and off the Fish Docks in Lower Township, showed readings of 240 and 2,400 MPN, respectively. Those areas are posted for the enk tire summer, Lamanna I said. Preliminary testing on I June 24 had counts ranging I from 220 to 2,400 MPN in I North Wildwood back bays, I but confirmatory samples I taken June 27 showed counts ranging from 8 to 170 MPN. A similar situation occured in Sea Isle City, where high back bay counts ranging from 240 to 1,600 MPN were recorded June 24. Re tests on June 27 showed counts of between 13 and 170 MPN. "WE HAD SEVERAL sites that tested high in preliminary and were fine in confirmatory (testing)," Lamanna said. "In the back bays you have some municipalities with (sewage) outfall lines, possibly have boats discharging (sewage), you have a combination of things." High counts continue to I be recorded in the Stone Harbor Manor area, a site Lamanna said is chronically high because of leachate through bulkheads from sub-surface sewage disposal systems. Counts in that area, which Lamanna said will likely remain posted for the summer, ranged from 240 at the end of Acton Drive to 1,600 in Shelter Haven Basin. THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S special marina survey showed high counts at North Wildwood marina (220 MPN), the B & E Marina at 26th Street in Wildwood (920 MPN). the Wildwood Yacht Basin (1,600 MPN) and Utsch's marina in Scbellengers Landing (240 MPN) on June 24. A June 26 confirmatory sample cleared the B & E marina (79 MPN) but showed continued high

counts at North Wildwood marina (220 MPN), the Wildwood Yacht Basin (350 MPN) and Utsch's (920 MPN). The Marina surveyed is designed to determine whether illegally discharged sewage from boats is polluting back bay waters, Lamanna said. ANOTHER SPECIAL survey, which is exploring areas north of the Cox Hall Creek sewage outfall line in Lower Township, turned up continued high counts at Maryland Avenue (920 MPN) and Eldrige Avenue in Middle Township (920 MPN). Lamanna said his department hasn't yet determined the souce of high counts which have persisted for several weeks. "We feel that we could be dealing with a combination of things." Lamanna- said. "Possibly wildlife is contributing to the problem, and also the number of dead horseshoe crabs, which attract seagulls." The Health Department sampled and resampled 13 sites on the Tuckahoe River last week after high fecal counts were recorded. It will monitor three sites — the state Fish and Game Bathing Beach, a site off Marshallville Road and a site in the upper river near Estell Manor — weekly. The results will be published in this newspaper on Wednesdays. PRELIMINARY TESTING on June 25 showed counts ranging from a low of 70 MPN at the U.S. Geological Survey Stream Guage Station to 1,600 MPN from an unnamed branch on Route 49 in Tuckahoe. Retests June 27 showed counts ranging from 8 MPN at River View Campground to 1,600 MPN at the unnamed Tuckahoe branch. Four sites exceeded the 200 MPN standard and were posted. Lamanna said. Still, he found reason to be optimistic. "While counts remained high in some sites, they came down across the board in several areas," Lamanna said. LAMANNA SAID a fullblown study, with assistance from the Atlantic County Health Department, and possibly Cumberland County, should be concluded in about 10 days. He said his department has stepped up water testing, and is dumping flourescent dye in the toilets erf residents living near the river to determine if pollution is coming from sewage systems. "We did uncover some minor violations last week, what we call gray water violations, like kitchen wastes from sinks, tub water, etc.," Lamanna said. "We're in the process of notifying property owners that they're in violation of the Public Health Nuisance Code and they have inadequate sewage facilities or they're discharging sanitary sewage above the ground." Lamanna said the exact cause of pollution has not been determined, but may turn out to be run-off from farming operations or leachate from sewage systems. However, he said . there have been rum op of
sewage dumping on the river. "ONE THING I'm interested in knowing is if there is any foundation to the rumors of alleged dumping on the river that we've heard of," Lamanna said. "So far, we've found no evidence of that." Lamanna said the river
historically has had high fecal counts, and that several parts of the river were closed several years ago. "But this year we're dealing with the new automatic closure standards and we're applying those to the river," Lamanna said.
As part of the Health Department's recreational water monitoring program. 48 ocean sites are sampled Monday and 92 back bay sites on Tuesday Wednesday each week In the event of a high sample, that area, and sites nearby, are resampled within 24 hours.
