A BEAUTIFUL sunny day greeted the Dennis Township Historical Society's first annual house tour. The tour also featured craft demonstrations and refreshments. Bev Henry and Betty Ward, chairpersons of the event, report that, in addition to the tour being a financial success, it was fun. Next years tour may be expanded to include additional homes, some of which are in the process of repair and reconstruction. Husbands beware, get your fishing in now. A Thank You buffet dinner is planned for participating homeowners and guides in early September. The buffet dinner will be held at the home of Dr. Richard and Elizabeth Ward of Dennisville. FRANK BANNISH of Bannish Associates informs us that the township, as part of the new master plan, will appoint a historical preservation board to protect existing structures and aid in retaining the historic theme of our older neighborhoods. Certificates of "Appropriateness" for alterations and new construction are proposed. It then has to follow that "Certificate of Inappropriateness" will also issue. Some concern has been voiced that the preservation board could present an additional restriction on construction in an area already governed by zoning regulations and in many areas by the Pinelands Commission. I suppose that depends on the amount of authority given the board and especially on its membership. A similar plan has worked very well in Haddonfield. CROOKED HORN Gunning Gub of Belleplain has scheduled a follow-up Mud Race Aug. 9 on the club grounds. The spring event attracted more than 2,000 four-wheel-drive buffs who enjoyed the action and consumed all available food and refreshments. Ample supplies are promised for August. Big Foot is expected to compete, so rev-up your rig and come | on down. WOODBINE Fire Co. is preparing its annual bar-b-que, at the baseball field in Woodbine Aug. 3. The event will close with a display of fireworks. SOUTH DENNIS youngsters will welcome the Roller Skating Rink and Custard Stand being built on Route 83. Ground is cleared and construction is on the way. DELAWARE BAY sport and commercial fishermen report bumper catches of weakfish (sea trout) and blues Commercial crabbers are taking bushels of blue claws as the season goes into full gear. So get your baskets, buckets and straw hats and join the fun. Good sports are not hard to find along the western shore. A -LARGE OTTER was spotted crossing a Belleplain forest road last i r

week. He had to be more than four-foot long. These playful, friendly animals are protected by law now and, hopefully, will survive. Beavers, also protected, are doing well at the small state forest near Gint's Mill in Dennis Township and at the MacNamara State Forest in Tuckahoe. It's not unusual to see two or three of them swimming around on every visit. MARLENE, EDDIE. Dick and Richard Clark are vacationing - fishing in Maine for two weeks. We await the reports which will be taken, as usual, if there are no pictures, with a grain of salt. MONORAIL offered to Cape May County? A Philadelphia to Cape May monorail has been offered, free of charge, to Cape May County be a reputable transportation company. The proposed speed line would be constructed in return for the profit during the first 10 years of operation. Sound Good? Well it didn't in 1972, when the offer was made and turned down by powers that were. • Ben Pruss of Pennsauken, one of the designing engineers with the company, relates the story which still amazes me. Can you imagine the effect such a transportation system would have had on our county during the past 14 years? Well, maybe that's why it was turned down.
