Roy Gillian, with his wife, Pat. holding the Bible, was sworn in by Municipal Judge Richard A. Russell as the new mayor at noontime ceremonies on the stage of the Music Pier auditorium July 1. Also sworn into office were Jeanne M. Clunn. with husband Dick holding the Bible; Gary Jessel. with wife Denise holding | the Bible; and Nickolas J. Troffa Jr.. with wife Vi holding the Bible, g CLUNN, JESSEL. and ■ Troffa are the city's three council members at. large. Gillian, Jessel, and Troffa are newcomers to office while Clunn has been a member of council for the past eight years. James Gillian, the mayor's son, was the master of ceremonies. Walter Fredericks sung "The Star Spangled Banner" with accompaniest Jo-El Park. Reverend S Franklin T. Buck of the Ocean City Tabernacle said the invocation and benediction. Clunn, Jessel, and Troffa; » First Ward Councilman j Mark Videtto, Second j Ward Councilman William ; Mela, Third Ward Coun1 cilman John Esposito. and Fourth Ward Councilman Jack Jones. ALSO INTRODUCED were acting Business Ad , ministrator Donald Han. City Clerk Angela Pileggi, Solicitor Gerald Corcoran, and Municipal Judge Russell. All of the abovementioned city officials were seated on the stage. Pileggi called the meeting to order with the council members electing six-year council veteran Meis as new president and eight-year council veteran Jones as vice president. RESOLUTIONS were presented honoring former Mayor Jack Bittner, and former council-at-iarge members Henry S. Knight and Herbert J. Rrownlee for their years of service. Bittner was mayor for the past four years, while Knight and Brownlee were council members during the past eight years. The meeting was adjourned with the musical group the "Young Entertainers" singing patriotic selections. Among the over 400 spectators were former Mayors Chester Wimberg and Tom Waldman; County Clerk Angela Pulvino. County Sheriff Jim Plousis. State Sen. Jim Hurley, Freeholder Jim Kilpatrick. and former County Republican Chairman Phil Malalucci. Also in the audience was Mayor Gillian's father, who will be 96 years old next month. After the ceremonies, everyone was invited to walk into the pier's solarium where tables were set up with trays of complimentary dainty sandwiches, cold cuts, garnishes, rolls, and salads for the guests to munch, with punch to drink. OVER 300 people attended Mayor Gillian's Inaugural Ball at the Flanders Hotel on the evening of July 1. The ladies wore exquisite evening dresses and gowns while most of the gentlemen were dressed in tuxedos. The guests enjoyed from a lavish buffet. Among the dignitaries
who attended were of course, the mayor and his wife; Council president Meis and wife, Myra; Jones and his wife, Maryann; Jessel and his wife, D and Trofa and his wife. Also in attendance were Congressman William Hughes and wife Nancy. County Clerk Pulvino and husband Jim, County Surrogate Bob Hentges and wife Dorothy, and former Chairman Matalucci and wife Barbara. Phil Turner was chairperson of the Inaugural Ball Committee. BILL WORKMAN was presented with the Paul Harris Fellow plaque by Ken Thorpe and Joe Talese was presented with the Osborne Nicholson (Paul Harris) award by Herb Godfrey at the Ocean City Rotary Club's Installation Banquet at the Atlantic City Country Club June 26, with Past District Rotary Governor Herb Hecker as the guest speaker Thorpe, who is a member of the local club, is the district governor nominee for 1987-1988. In addition to Thomas E. Shaw's being installed as the club's new president; Marty Wiszmer. first vice president; Rich Wingate. second vice president; Kenneth Moore, treasurer , Joe Hartman. secretary; and Bill Mauer, sergeant at arms, ten members of the club's board of directors were also installed. They are; Rick Baehrle, chairman of the publicity and youth committee; Fred Bonderchuk. attendance; Richard Gardener, community service; Warren Landi, vocational service; Bob Mohr, club service; Vaughn Paynter, director of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards; Jack Pruitt. foundation chairman; Mike Scioli, director of music and song; George Smith, international service; and Alan Stowe. club bulletin editor. THE FOLLOWING events will be held on the Music Pier The O.E.S. Friendship Chapter 173 Craft Show will be held 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. and a Teen Dance 8 p.m. July 10. The Al Alberts TV Showcase will be held 8 p.m. July 11. The Colony Club Antique and Craft Show will be held from 9a.m. - 3 p.m. and the Polish America String Band will perform 8 p.m. July 12. Fred Armand, who is the executive director of the County Chapter of the American Red Cross, was the guest speaker at a recent Ocean City Rotary Club meeting held at Mac's Restaurant in Somers Point. Armand spoke about the various services his organization has to offer which includes providing free blood to area hospitals, assisting families in disasters, providing life-saving courses, and offering health and safety courses to schools. Kiwanis Club recently held its election of officers for the new administrative year which begins in the fall. Robert Johnson of Johnson Realty was elected president; Allen Vernon Jr., a lawyer with the firm Mott & Mott, was elected first vice president; W. Scott Eisenlohr, who holds a management position with a local bank, was elected as second vice president. Brian Roberts, who is an associate pastor at St. Peter's United Methodist Church, was elected secretary ; and Joseph McQueen, who is retired, was elected treasurer. Mayor Gillian will be the guest speaker at the Ocean City Rotary Club's breakfast meeting at the Port-O-Call Restaurant 7 a.m. tomorrow. Leroy L. Dillon, who is an assistant attorney general with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, was the guest speaker at the Ocean City Exchange Club dinner meeting at Daniel's Restaurant in Somers Point June 23. Dalton; who is a member of the Madison, Wisconsin Exchange Club; spoke about the cooperation that most of the clubs have given to the Child Abuse Program. This is one of the projects which the Exchange Clubs raise money for and supports. THE OCEAN City High School Drama Guild production of "The Foreigner" has been chosen by the New Jersey Teen Arts Festival to tour the state in the Community Performance Project. "The Foreigner", which was the only theatre production to be honored at the festival, will be available to intermediate schools, high schools, and senior citizen centers throughout the state for assembly programs Student performers will also be giving comedy/improvisation workshops at selected schools. Cast members of "The Foreigner" are Tom Davis. Russ Benson. Colleen Callahan, and Tricia Bowman. Neal Mayer, an English and drama teacher, and Mary Benson, a mathematics teacher, are the co-directors of the production.
