Whimsey is alive and well and living in Cape May County. Where in particular? Oh, I don't know; it flits around from place to place. If you've just arrived at the shore, and you don't quite see the whimsey yet. just blink a few times to get the dusty blue of the city out of your eyes — and there it is. A short time ago in Ocean City there was a pie eating contest where the object was not how many pies you could eat but what kind of fanciful design you could bite out of just one. They like whimsey in Ocean City — especially at the crab races. WHIMSEY WAS definitely present for the recent Cape May City Tacky Art Exhibit. And just look at all that whimsey forever preserved in the details on all those Victorian homes. A great word, "whimsey". Anglo-Saxon — very British. Onomatapoetic: it sounds just like what it means — like a sudden, refreshing breeze. The dictionary says that words beginning with "wh" should be pronounced as if they were spelled "hw" — fully aspirated. Say it that way. Say "hwimsey." Truly one of the great silly words in the English language. WHIMSEY MEANS caprice, fancy, notion, fantasm, some comical, unexplainable impulse. Its other forms include "whimwham". "trim-tram", "flim-flam", "jim-jam". and — my personal favorite — _ "whimseycado". The sun. the ocean, the sea air, the rural atmosphere, the rest and relaxation we experience on vacation are all healthy J for our bodies, and a good I dose of whimsey can do I wonders for the soul. So get out there and exercise your whimsey! THE VICTORIANS knew the value of whimsey all year 'round in their otherwise staid and conservative lives. They

popularized the Whimsey Box; and you can spot a few around in the local antiques shops. Whimsey Boxes come in various sizes, are made of fabric, wood, marble, porcelain — any material, and are fancifully decorated with either beads, jewels, hand painted animals, floral reliefs, or combinations of these. Whimsey Boxes are, as their name suggests, useless, for the most part — and proudly so. They are decorative in their own right. Victorians put them everywhere and anywhere in their homes. We don't have to keep anything in them but our sense of humor, and look at them to remember to put life's complicated series of obligations and explanations in perspective. OR WE CAN use them to hold mementoes, souvenirs, and reminders of past sillinesses. Actually, any little box that strikes your fancy can be your Whimsey Box. And the antique shops have a fabulous variety, so don't overlook them. Don't overlook, either, the possibilities for whimsey in decorating your home. You should be serious about decorating your rooms — it takes a lot of time, work and money — but this doesn't mean that your house has to look so serious. THE SHOPS are teeming with unusual objects, conversation pieces and curiosities. There are sculptures and figurines, door knobs and furniture hardware, ashtrays, prints, miniatures, posters, candy dishes, etc., etc. — all enough to lighten your most tedious day, and bring a smile, a simper, a smirk, even a wry grin to the faces of even your most formal guests. And don't fail to consider becoming a collector just because you feel you have to know a great deal. Just collect, and your collection will teach you all you need to know about itself. LORD PETER Whimsey is the fictional crime-solver in Dorothy Sayers' series of detective stories set in London in the 1920s and 30s. Lord Whimsey collects all sorts of interesting things. He doesn't know or isn't saying why; they just intrigue him. He a fascinating man. and his whimsical collecting habits contribute a greal deal to his brilliance. They have honed his "hunch", so he can slice right through a mystery and bag the bad guy BACK IN YOUR home or apartment, whimsey can make you brilliant at solving some decorating mysteries. You can stop puzzling about what's "right" and ask yourself truly — ''What's interesting?" Larger accessories like lamps, mirrors, and occasional tables are available in all sorts of tastefully

By Arthur H. Schwerdt whimsical shapes and designs. Forget the Whimsey Box, how about a WHIMSEY ROOM''! Do you think you could pull it off in the den? the family room? guest room? CONSIDER Victorian side chairs. Edwardian smoking tables. Art Nouveau mirrors. Whimsey can prove to you that you are far more interesting than even you might have suspected. You can spell "whimsey" either with just a "y" or with an "ey," as I have. I forget how Lord Peter spells it. Leave it to "whimsey" to give you a choice. I don't know why I chose to spell it with an "ey." (Arthur Schwerdt, coowner of The August Farmhouse, on Route 9 in Swainton, invites questions c/o this newspaper.)
