Veteran Detroit rocker Bob Seger breaks a lengthy absence from the recording scene with a strong effort in Like A Rock (Capitol). As usual. Seger s strengths lie in his dramatic material, emotional singing, and slick production. While it's true Seger has matured, losing a bit of his youthful aggression, he is still a committed performer who is not afraid of speaking his mind. Like A Rock is good Seger and that's all his fans need to know. Mistrial (RCA) is Lou Reed at his best. The lyrics are biting, yet humorous, the music simple, yet tight, and it's all tied together with Reed's confident attitude. With the instrumentation stripped to basics, the rawness of Lou Reed the performer is best appreciated. Due %to extensive experimentation, Reed's solo career has been, to say the least, erratic, but this his 18th release, is one of his high points. WHEN LAST heard from, Los Angeles Dream Syndicate seemed to have lost direction. Their hybrid of Velvet Underground melodies, heavy metal guitar licks, and country themes had become a jumbled mess. 5 The material was 6 mediocre at best, seeming- ^ ly serving as an excuse for Karl Precoda to take a guitar solo. Out Of The Grey (Big Time, 6777 Hollywood Blvd. . 7th Floor, Hollywood CA. 90028) is sharper, with chief songwriter and vocalist Steve Wynn writing and performing "real" songs. i New guitarist Paul Cutler might lack the flash of the now departed Precoda, but he supports Wynn's performances instead of trying to upstage him. It will be interesting to see if The Dream Syndicate can regain its lost momemtum with Out Of The Grey. CHARLIE PICKETT'S Route 33 (Twin Tone, 445 Oliver Inc. South, Mpls, MN. 55405) is one of those | rare rock and roll gems that has the magic of 50's/60's music without the trappings of nostalgia. I Florida's Pickett is an enthusiastic singer with some hot musical support. His songs are equally as dynamic as the performers, making for a highly enjoyable combination. Good stuff here. R&B Skeletons In The Closet (Capitol) is another amazing effort from George Clinton. The key to its success is Clinton's tight band providing a solid rhythm and his comic j book-like lyrics. Clinton re- I mains one of the hottest and most original singers/songwriters/producers in soul music today and this album will have people dancing, as well as laughing.
