RUNNING SCARED" starring Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal directed by Peter Hyams an MGM release -RUTHLESS PEOPLE-' starring Danny DeVito and Bette Midler a Touchstone Films release Last month, two new comedies arrived on the same weekend. While they are very different from each other, they both deserve a pat on the back for coming out at a very competitive time of the year. RUNNING SCARED is a 'decent buddy pic" where you don't have to have a month like Eddie Murphy to come across as a likeable character. While the plot does not vary much from any standard Miami Vice episode, the stars, Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal, can keep any audience entertained. Like Rodney Dangerfield's latest film. Back to School. Running Scared would not be much without Hines and Crystal. Their friendship is strong and Crystal's comedy routines complement Hines' mellow J smoothness. Ruthless People, however, is held together by not just the actors, but by a strange script and some tight direction. In this movie, Danny DeVito wants to kill his wife. Bette Midler. Suddenly, she is kidnapped by a young couple, portrayed by Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater. The husband doesn't want her and the kidnappers are just dying to get Wetlands Lectures STONE HARBOR - The Witmer Stone Club has announced. -fts summer lecture seifes, to be held in the Marshvi(ew Lecture Hall of the Weljands Institute, Stone Harbor Boulevard. rid of her. The people in this movie are so ruthless, one can get the feeling that someone's going to get stuck holding the last straw, while the other will live on the ruthlessness behind him or her. In both Running scared and Ruthless People, someone is left holding the bag. The victim: the moviegoer. While Running Scared is a conventional movie with an unconventional cast. Ruthless People is an unconventional movie with a secure cast that can pull off this sort of outrageous black humor. Scared relies a bit too much on Hines and Crystal's appeal, while Ruthless relies too much on I its original material, which in this day and age is few j and far between. On the whole, both films are worthy of an audience. They are both very funny and very likeable. At least these two are not sequels! Ratings: ••••-excellent, •••-good, ••- fair.'-poor, below '-bomb.
