Blackledge Gets Medal
AVALON — Marine Maj. Matthew W. Blackledge, son of Roy H. Blackledge of this borough, recently received the Navy Commendation Medal. He received the decoration while serving with 3rd Force Service Support Group, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, Feb. 19 to Sept. 14, 1985. As the Commanding Officer, Detachment 2, Brigade Service Support Group 9, Blackledge exercised leadership and technical expertise instrumental in providing Marine Aricraft Group 90 with exceptional combat service support during a major exercise. AS THE commanding officer of Combat Service Support Detachment 35, Blackledge skillfully planned and executed superior support during Incremental Training in the Republic of Korea, the citation continues. While assigned as the of-ficer-in-charge of 3rd Force Service Support Group Liaison Team in Taegu, Republic of Korea, Blackledge established a ® reference library and V wrote a Combat Service t Support handbook which * simplified difficult 2 logistical procedures for all r Marine units, it concludes. D.C. - Senator Bill Bradley (D-N.J.) has announced that all young men and women interested in seeking nominations to the U.S. Naval, Air Force, Merchant Marine and Military Academies for the class entering in July of 1987 must submit their completed application form by Oct. 17. Candidates can obtain an application packet by contacting Sen. Bradley's office in Union. The deadline for submitting a completed application form is October 17. All additional support materials; final junior year transcript with grade point average and class rank, ACT or SAT scores and three recommendation forms, must be submitted by Oct. 31. ONLY CANDIDATES whose files are completed by Oct. 31 can be given full consideration. All potential candidates may also obtain a nomination from Sen. Frank Lautenberg, the Representative from their Congressional district, the President or the VicePresident in order to be considered for an appointment. Because competition for academy nominations is extremely keen, it is recommended that interested students submit applications to all the available nomination authorities. The deadlines may differ for each nominating authority and it is advisable that candidates take steps to make themselves aware of these differences. CANDIDATES must be citizens of the United States, legal residents of the state of New Jersey, unmarried and have no children. and be at least 17 years of age but not past their 22nd birthday on July of the year of admission. Applicants will be screened on the basis of their high school grades, class rank, college entrance examination scores, extra-curricular activities (athletic and non-athletic), leadership potential, motivation and recommenda tions . Candidates who successfully pass the initial review will be contacted to schedule an interview in late November to be conducted in New Jersey The four interview panels will consist of approximately 25 New Jersey men and women with backgrounds in education, business, religion and civic affairs. The group will be chaired by Paul Chase, principal staff engineer in research and development at PSEAG. Chase has served as a panelist for six years. Bradley will select his nominees based on the recommendations of the interview panels and will announce his nominees in late December.
