Ocean Waters Fine Swimming Banned In Dennisville Lake

By GREGG LAWSON CREST HAVEN - Add Dennisville Lake to the list of mainland waters with high counts of fecal coliform bacteria. The county Health Department last week posted three sites on the lake as "no swimming" after counts exceeding 200 MPN (Most Probable Number) were recorded July 2. The state standard is 50 MPN for ocean waters and 200 MPN for backbays and freshwater. The county Health Department requires two consecutive readings of 200 MPN or above to close bathing areas. POSTED WEREWoolson's Dam (240 MPN). Dennisville Campground (220MPN) and an area south of Fedler Ditch (540 MPN). An area north of Fedler Ditch (70 MPN) and Ludlams (5 MPN) all recorded acceptable readings. According to Public Health Coordinator Louis J. Lammanna, the Health Department has yet to determine the source of contamination. "At this point in time, we don't know what the source is. We're conducting futher studies." Lamanna said. "Occasionally we've seen high counts here in the past, but these readings seem to be somewhat consistent." A TESTING OF four locations on June 25 showed high counts of 240 MPN at Dennisville Campground. an area north of Fedler Ditch and Ludlams. The area near the Route 47 outfall tested fine at 5 MPN. The Health Department routinely tests two sites on the lake, but testing has been expanded to six because of high readings Lamanna said. Another freshwater site, the Tuckahoe River, has had a seven-mile stretch closed for 11 days because of high fecal counts rang ing from 240 to 2,400 MPN (the highest possible reading). PRELIMINARY SAMPLES of ocean waters recorded high counts off Wildwood at Maple and Ocean avenues (540 MPN), Schellenger and Ocean avenues (1600 MPN) and Montgomery Avenue (350 MPN) on June 30. Resampling on July 2 recorded acceptable levels, ranging from 8 to 36 MPN at these sites and 23 to 130 MPN at adjacent sites. "We actually did three follow-up runs and each one was beautiful," Lamanna said. "We took one in the morning, afternoon and evening on the follow-up survey and all were good." A SPECIAL SURVEY on July 2 recorded the following counts at other Wildwood sites: 12th and Ocean (2 MPN), Poplar and Ocean (11 MPN), Oak and Ocean (23 MPN), Spencer and Ocean (17 MPN), Taylor and Ocean (2 MPN) and Cresse and Ocean (8MPN). "They're the in-between

sites we tested last week after the high counts. They all tested clean," Lamanna said. "They were done in conjunction with a sanitary survey." The sanitary survey, he said, couldn't trace the source of June 30's high readings. The July 2 confirmatory counts were taken after heavy rainfall on Tuesday night. Lamanna said. Rainfall can contribute to fecal counts by washing animal waste from the street into discharge areas, but Lamanna credited maintenance programs with keeping counts low. "ONE OF THE THINGS they're doing over there is maintaining drainage systems and chlorinating catch basins in the streets," Lamanna said. "It's been shown that good storm drain and catch basin maintenacne systems will severely decrease bacteria in back bay and ocean areas where they discaharge." Bay wy n Road and Wildwood Avenue in Lower Township were the only ocean sites posted last week. Both are near the Cox Hall Creek sewage outfall line in the Delaware Bay. a traditional problem, area. After preliminary samples of 350 MPN at Baywyn and Fern roads and 540 MPN at Wildwood Avenue on June 30, confirmatory readings on July 2 showed a count of 350 MPN at Baywyn. 240 MPN at Wildwood Avenue and 70 at Fern Road (where signs were removed ) . AS PART OF A special survey of areas north of Cox Hall Creek, the Health Department tested Eldrige Avenue in Villas (350 MPN) and Maryland Avenue in Middle Township (110 MPN). Both areas have had consistently high counts in past weeks. In the back bays, a cove in Ocean City between 8th and 9th avenues was posted after two consecutive readings of 240 MPN on JUne 30 and July 2. Although a count of 240 MPN was recorded off 7th Street, a confimatory sampiy tested fine at 23 MPN. Two locations in the Sea Isle City back bay were posted last week, midlagoon between 42nd and 43rd streets and the end of the same lagoon. A JULY 2 SAMPLE showed high counts at the Boat Ramp south of the trailer park (240 MPN), the middle (540 MPN) and end (220 MPN) of the lagoon, and the lagoon between 46th and 47th streets (920 MPN). A July 3 confirmatory reading cleared the boat ramp (31 MPN) and the 46th and 47th street lagoon <13 MPN), but showed continued high counts midlagoon at 42nd and 43rd (540 MPN) and the end of that lagoon (920 MPN). "That's where the commercial fisherman dock their boats," Lamanna said of the lagoon. Three areas were posted in the Avalon back bay.

Preliminary samples on Jirne 30 showed 11 sites with high counts ranging from 240 MPN to 2,400 MPN. Confirmatory sampling on June 3 showed three areas with continued high counts: at the north 21st street bridge <540 MPN), the Avalon public pier (240 MPN) and south of the 25th street bridge (240 MPN). IN LOWER TOWNSHIP, the area off Lunds fish docks remained posted after a 1,600 MPN count on July 1. "We've had problems there before, "Lamanna said. "We're not going to take those signs down because it's a commercial fishing area." The entrance to South Jersey Marina, after a 540 MPN count on July 1, tested within acceptable limits on July 3 at 170 MPN. In Cape May City Harbor, the area near the East Bridge was posted after readings of 540 MPN on July 1 and 1,600 MPN on July 3. In the North Wildwood back bay, the area off the North Wildwood sewage treatment plant outfall recorded a count of 240 MPN on July 1. THAT AREA is posted because it is an outfall line, and it will remain posted all season," Lamanna said. Continued high counts, ranging from 220 MPN to 920 MPN were recorded in the Stone Harbor Manor area, a site Lamanna said has been historically bad because of leachate from subsurface sanitary sewage systems. "Years ago we conducted an intensive study of the Stone Harbor Manor ares, not only dye testing but also water sampling, and one confirmed the other," Lamanna said. "There is a lot of leachate in that area. "These are approved systems installed by licensed engineers, but they are victims of the tidal flow through the bulkheads there," he added. "Nothing short of installing municipal sewage collection lines can remedy the problem." As part of the Health Department's recreational water monitoring program, 48 ocean sites are sampled Monday and 92 back bay sited on Tuesday and Wednesday each week.
