(This is the second of a series on dealing with the hot weather problems of your pets.) If your pet itches (Don't they all?), hot weather makes it worse. Bacterial infections crop up without warning. Fleas have a field day with warm weather and that fur coat on your pet serves as a source of only discomfort and self mutilation. If your pet would be more comfortable with a groooming with or without a "summer clip", by ail means have it done by your groomer. Constantly employ flea control and be on the lookout for bacterial flare-ups. especially on longer-haired dogs. These moist patches of raw. itchy skin are called hot spots. Excessive itching without the presence of fleas can reasonably be controlled with your veterinarian's help. A FLEA problem will certainly require both help from your veterinarian and your own work to control. " 'Spike' stopped eating yesterday and won't touch his food at all this morning. Is there anything wrong?" Possibly nothing is wrong if a pet abruptly stops eating in the middle of a hot, humid spell and becomes lethargic. If your pet is close to normal in behaviour but won't eat, it is best to relax and wait for the hot weather to break before deciding that sickness is present. IF THE lethargy and inappetance continues or other unusual health signs crop up, have your veterinarian check your animal friend out. Thunderstorms tend to scare pets, especially dogs. Your veterinarian probably can prescribe some safe tranquilizers to use when needed, as-long as your pet is in good health and has met some basic requirements for a tranquilizer prescription. It would be unusual for a veterinarian to prescribe tranquilizers without some knowledge of your pet's health through either a physical examination or some indication that tranquilizers have been safely prescribed for the pet before by another veterinarian. SUMMERS BRING with them the joy of barbecues, parties and outdoor activities. If your pet is toasting marshmellows along with you outside, think of his comfort as Well. Lightly spray some mosquito repellent over his coat, especially around the ears, abdomen and legs. Please do not substitute food off the grill for your pet's regular diet; upset ^tomachs may follow. If your dog or cat will be outdoors in the sun for a long time, provide some form of shade. By all means, tie your pet to a tree or post and use a leash and coke chain when walking about the yard. DURING THE summer season, our county is jammed with tourists and their vehicles. An un tethered pet will get hit by a car eventually and you, as the owner, will pay emotionally and financially. Your pet will suffer needlessly
because you couldn't take the time to use a leash and guarantee your animal's safety. White animals are especially susceptible to sunburn and changes in their skin which can lead to cancerous lesions. If "Snowy" loves to sit in the sun but has not a bit of pigment in his skin, a sunscreen is in order. Use commercially available sunscreen with a SPF of 15, dab it particularly on the ears and nose. THE BEST alternative to this is to limit sunbathing time. Squamous cell carcinaoraa is one particularly zealous disease which shows up mostly in white cats which sunbathe excess! vely without protection If you detect some problems on the skin of your cat or dog, especially around the ears, eyelids, lips or nose, ask your veterinarian to take a look for you. Air conditioners and fans are fine for pete, but try to keep your animals, particularly birds, away from the drafty discharges of these machines. HEAT AND humidity can make life miserable for a veterinary heart patient
and air conditioning can contribute to better health during the "dog days" of summer. The final word is: if you are miserable from the heat, your pet is also. If you don't feel like eating, don't expect your animal to do so. Most of all, if you cannot work or exercise in the heat, take it easy on your animals too. Let them keep cool as best as they know how. It is sometimes better to leave them alone rather than constantly do what you believe would make them feel cooler. However, I never met a dog which didn't like a cold bath or hosing down on a hot day. SINK SWIM? hminlBii •nd Mgn up tar ■ ■aHtauniHUfiUy 4" American RedCroes
