! MKIDGE CORSON'S INLET.

Ilw, in AUantic County work has ticcn commenerd on the 3 bridge from Longport to Somers Point. This project is ■pdt through by the Atlantic County Board pi Freeholder

:*I^tere is talk auioup our Freeholders of building a bridge across

■ Inlet, bat so far it is just talk and nothing more.

!." ^tis bridge, like the one front L mgtx.rl, should be built—

s no questioning that. The only poii.t that is 5x»thering the eaf the upp'.-r and in the middle jurl of the county-, is how

^Thr bridge acrom Corson’s Inlet will eventually lie built; of Itfect there is 110 doubt in the ti.ind of even the most pessimistic

e growtii ami increased travel to and from the resorts on both /the Inlet make it imperative that a-new outlet be built to

Boulevard suaitnei congestion.

• a ■faooLn- it is just a mailer of time, although why any more elapse before steps to secure this bridge are taken ii

fishing is restored, the cost of food ash will become prob

the city markets.

It has been demonstrated that the middletneu will not cot their

Jrofits, and if the pound net fish supply is abolished the cost offish

will soar. J

The anti-pound net bill; as introduced by Assemblyman Wliftman in the Legislature, is alike unjust to those who have vast amounts of capital tied up in this important industry, to the consumer (who will pay more for his fish), and the employes of the pound net

fishermen (who will be thrown out of employment). Locally, the annual pay roll of the several fish companies ag-

gregates $33,000 per year, which It will be admitted is^ not an

amount to be laughed at

Fight the Hook and Line Fishermen, and their miserably selfish nonsensical bill. The public hearing on the Anti-Bill will take place in t}ic tU*.e House at Trenton on Tuesday next, February 23. PROMOTING PROSPERITY. In various parts of the country, “ Build now ” and other move meats have been started to boom business. It is of course difficult to persuade people to alter individual plans to help on a g» neral movement. But still there are many cases where people con’d promote their own interest* as well as set money in circulation in this W>> Contractors would build a house to-day cheaper , in all probability than they would a /ear from now. Repair joba would in some cases be cheaper, and in any event vexations delays could be saved

by anticipating one’s wants.

Most people let buildings go too long without necessary renovation. Money saved by economising in bouse paint may not ,tally be saved by any means. The impression gets abroad that a house is run down, and if one wants to sell be finds it has acquired a poor reputation. Paint preserves building material. Farmers in particular are often slack. They let buildings grow unnecessarily weather beaten, actually .increasing future repair bills, liesides giving a general impression that they, are unprogressive. Biore keepers do not realize keenly enongh the advantage ol an attractive interior. They need to do over walls and ceilings frequently, thev give an impression of untidiness that hurts trade. No man con prosper in business without keeping up the appearance of bis

location.

It every householder, every merchant and every farmer would look over bis buildings critically, and spend at once the money that ought to be laid out, and which he could afibrd, for the good of his property and his business, a big step would be taken toward restoring full prosperity.

L IFE INSURANCE is <pUyi»R an important pan in hui^an affairs to-day. As a mediuirr ifip Saving money and an investment 1 Ittroialring protection to the iatntiy it stands ..alone. Millions havt found life insurance indispensable in 'the hour of trouble.

What then is there to hinder lii - ini mediate cynst ruction of this yrtant comn-ciing link, even a* Atlantic County is linking to- ^ fher its lower county and supply iug a new outlet for its transit ? It has lieen argued tha*. the Cuison’s Inlet bridge should nut he t uhtjl tlic County could build all the Inidgrs connecting the 5 of the coast. THE HIGH COST OF DISTRIBUTING FOOD PRODUCTS, A wide range of plans is being tried, in tbe endeavor to bring back the old time conditions of direct trade between producer aud cousMiner, or at least between producer and retailer. One method attaining some popularity, is the public market idea. Fanners drive in, or send in some member of tbe family or hired uiau, with stocks of goods. Several farmers may combine to send in a supply to tbe stalls. Such markets depend for their success upon several conditions. The Americas people will not tolerate poor giods. ^ Unles* some market director has tbe absolute power to inspect the stack and condemn unfit articles for sale at that market, and unless be exercises tliat power strictly, a great de?l of poor truck will be worked oft That w ni give the market a bad uame, aud outside stores will be

preferred.

Another essential for success is a good system of rural transportation. If the farms supplying the market arc reached only over poor or rough roads, the daily ttansportation of goods iu small lots becomes too costly. If there is good trolley or rail connection with outlying farms, the chance of keeping up regular and fresh supplies

is much better.

A third essential is that the public give up its lazy reliance on

delivery wagons and earn - their own bundles.

Efforts are being made all over the country by agricultftal alleges, farm bureaus, etc., to interest city people in buying from be farmer by parcel post and express. Containeis are being devised t„ carry regular supplies of eggs, butter, chickens, greens, etc. It is asserted that a group of city families should be able to pay five cents a dozen more for eggs, five cents a pound more for butler, than the firmer now gets, and still underbid the grocer five cents eacli. This s ems to be a hope rather than a demonstrated tact. But there is something in the idea The retail dealer, however, if he is enterrising in seeking opportunities for direct purchase of goods, and if ■ he uses the aid of the newspaper to reach out and broaden his

\\ hat if it (n|d( . an impregnable position.
