REFORMING THE WOMEN'S PAGES. An effort to improve the women’s pages in newspapers is rc-
t ported at the National Convention of Young Women’s Christian 1*Associations, held the past week at Los Angeles, Cal. The E National Board of this organization disapproves of the love and |j beauty copy which constitutes so targe a share of the typical woman’s pag_. It proposes to offer in it£ place morally-uplifting
articles.
Any eflort to improve the newspaper press of the country is always welcomed by newspaper men and the public. But it must be practical Nothing would please the editor better than to fill Lis pages wi.b articles on the true, the good and the beantifnl, if the public demanded it Bat it is to be feared that a ..ewspaper of that [■ chamber would not be able to pay the salaries of its working force ^ or the cost of its type. ; -t is the popular sentiment that a woman must make herself i personally attractive. Her wealthy cousins leave it all to the dress1 maker and the milliner and the beauty doctor, aud need no newspaper advice. But the woman on a inodcnicc allowance or wage mast cat a great many corners to make hciself decently presentable. The newspaper tells her how to do it Also the newspaper is practically a school in domestic science. It prints a great many Articles showing how women can make : themselves more efficient in hotisehold tasks. The old monk’s proverb said “ To work is to pray.” No labor is nobler, none belter worth studying, than the processes of daily home life. It is probably true that the average woman's page is rather below the average woman’s intelligence. There is plenty of room for improvement along the line where the National Y. W. C. A. is looking. Much less might be said about complexions, and much mt babies and food and sanitation aud women's work as icrs and in business positions.

Now that Lew Stevens has hi* hat in the ring for the Senatorial nomination, we can expect some doing* at the primary election after all. For once we agree with Uie Atlantic City " Preaa.” They aay, in a recent “ Cape May County is certain to . -n to the Republican ranks, where It belongs, this lall." We think *o too. Clean-up week has come and gone. Let the work go on, however. This sudden splurge for one waek, and dirt for fifty-one, reminds one of the verbial annual bath. Clean up al time—and keep the city clean.

MIGHT HA VE BEEN WRITTEN FOR SEA ISLE Boards of Trade, Business Men’s Associations, Chambers or
Commerce, Improvement Societies—a town is pretty poorly equippefl if h lacks some such machinery for promoting its progress. Yet time-tenths of these organizations arc full of dead wood,
and half of them never do any real work whatever. It very frequently happens like this : A town either has no
business organization or ii wishes U> re-orgauizc and make a fresh start. A diuncr is held, with toastmaster aud speakers and genera] jubilation aod good fellowship. Over the wine aud the walnuts
town promotion looks easy.
A nominating committee is appointed, aud a formidable list of / committees is Inougbt in. Chaiimauships are handed out as a ■ compliment to elderly capitalists who have all the money they want and ate indifferent whether the town advances or not The Muchint is so complicated that it breaks down of its own weight. More than half of the committees appointed by the average board of
trade never do a stroke of work.
•% In forming or rc-orgauiziug a business men’s association, a vWy simple form of government is needed. Only a few committees < should be appointed, and no places should be handed out to anyone as a mere compliment. They should be given only to those *bo * will work. The head of the organization should meet with his committee chairmen regularly. If a committee docs not do the woik for which it was appointed, new men should be put in as soon
, as it can be done without friction.
It is the regrettable fact that a few people usually do tbe work ©f any organization. Consequently the work should l>c made just as easy as possible for those few people. The committee of one is
, often the most efficient. Vou can oltcu get au able business man Mr. Joseph V. Little, of Bala, J'a., to do a piece of work himself, when he would never undertake it if-I^k’IfteiuI^bSIdiS o' l^oeT^lY.
