UNCONFIRMED NEWS.

If newspapers printed only the things that some public men uk they should print, they would have little else but real estate n and transfers, marriages and deaths. At the height of the yellow journalism movement, a host of s never made efforts to distinguish between rumor and fact If s a despatch that the Japs had landed troops on the Philip1, they chucked it in and denied it next day in small type. More a they did not bother to insert any denial—nnless it uad a string

a the form of a possible libel-suit.

|L ^ yite war news is full of fakes. Some of these are feelers, sent mt by some government anxious to try out a certain idea on public itimenL The confusion of war daily sets afloat a thousand rumors f that are merely someone’s surmise. It often t.ems as if the big metropolitan papers fail to estimate £high enough the intelligence of the public The hustling dwellers I in New York, Chicago and San Francisco may be too busy to read .nything but headlines ; but there are millions of otlierr who read f intelligently and form opinions. When the editor puts a headline on a story showing that he accepts it as fact, his audience may read i it through and pronounce it a fake. A newspaper that *doc:. that I may sell on street cars and railroad trains ; but it will never get any I bold on homes where thoughtful people read, estimate and weigh.

LOST AND FOUND.

A woman who recently lost a handbag of some value on the r *treeU of a large city was telling the ot'.er day about her obaerations of 4 Lost aad Found * advertising. She watched a number of newspapers for a week or two. She says that there are half-a-dottyg people who advertise articles lost for every one who ever

'‘rtises anything found.

Any article of sufficient value to advertize is usually picked up by someone. It looks as if about five-sixths of the people who find articles of value-keep them, making no serious effort to find the owner. No doubt most people who would keep a found purse without effort to trace the owner would recoil with disgust at the idea of picking a person's pocket Their feeling would not mere!) be a fear of the law but a sense that it is a low-down dirty trick to steal. Yet they may do something equally mean by indirection. People should put themselves in ’.he place of the other person. Losing r. sum of money or other property is a most irritating experience. It fills one with disgust as to his own catelesness, and one begrudges the loss far more than if the money were equall) wasted in some extravagant aud needless purchase. The return ».l a lost article is a kindness not easily forgotten. There arc comparatively few people who on reading a ”Lo.t ” notice ia a papei > would decide not to restore the article. Failure to return the property would be so clearly a criminal act that a person must be |k>teutially a crook not to do it Keeping still about a found artick that one has not seen advertised is not, morally, any different; bul many people’s codes of honor are crude aud hazy. The alienee ol any actively dishonest act seems to satisfy them. If the dispn portion of U* and Found ndr. t.i.ing sUtcd .!»«is . pnotnl one, |

it indicates a yellow streak of dishonesty running through out. u,e ruio-d sun * bureau of education , ! Doctor FUrayth declare* that medical ‘ ______ ln*pcctlon of elementary echool chll-
