FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER to, 1915

THE SEA DEMANDS ITS TOLL Everyone, resident and visitor, should take to himselftheawful I**son taught by the drowuings Ulc last week and early this week, in and near Sea Isle City. Old Ocean, delightful as if is, peaceful asd calqi, can turn quickly into a inerrileat messenger of death for anyone who fails to realize and abide in her tremendous power. On Friday last, four young men, in the very prime of life, cnjoying a day's fishing at Coreon’a Inlet, ran their launch into dangerous water, and were hurled into eternity in almost the flash of an eye. If such a thing is possible, more sad is even the drowning which occurred on the Sea Isle beach on Labor Day morning, when a vacationer, young, strong, ventured into water too deep aud too powerful for his frail, human and on the last day of his season at the shore, and in his lost dip in the surf prior to leaving for his winter's toil in the dty, was swept away by the treacherous currents, and when next seen, aa hour later, was dead. The wonderful blue waters of the Atlantic annually attract tens of thousands to the shore, and all enjoy surf bathing. A few, now and (hen, imagine themselves stronger than Old Neptune, aud venture into doing things that their better judgment tells them not to do. Sometimes they get through all right, but more often they lose their lives, or are rescued after difficulty. All the resorts aloug the coast have bad a large death toll this year. North-east storms made the ocean, always great and powerful, more terrible than ever, aud the tact that only one fatality occurred on the Sea Isle beach speaks volumes for its safety. Someone has said, and truthfully, that the' sooner people tbat'tbe ocean is meant to bathe in, and not to swim in, the r off4veryone would be. It is true that in nine cases out ol ten, when a fatality occuis, it is the bather’s fault. The point wc wish to impress on you, gentle reader, is toexerciae care when in bathing. Carry the lesson of the drowniugs oi tfiia year borne with you, and remember it A lather is far better ofl, you will grant, paddling about waist deep in the surf, acason in and season out, than venturing into deep water just once. Another point well worth remembering is to bathe at high tide as much as possible. It is at this time tliat bathing is safest, aud by far more pleasant than at any other time. It is seldom that you bear of a drowning at high tide. The reason for this is that at high tide there is less undertow, and the beach, being uncovered at low tide, is solid and familiar to the bather. The opposite is true ai low

tide.

The see has always, and always will, no doubt, demand its annual toll of bathers aud pleasure seekers. Watch out that it doc’t catch you. FROM FARMER TO CONSUMER. Fanners living along the Beesley Point—Cape May Road worry little about securing a market for tbeir produce ai d fruit, selling it right on their premises. It is no unusual sight to sec twenty or thirty rudely erected stands facing the load, ip full sight of the traveling automobilisls, loaded down with fresh vegetables and fruit In view of the fact tliat hundreds of automobiles loaded with people pass up aud down the county rood, day in and day out the farmers' wares do not go unnoticed. It is surprising the clicutile of people who make use of these original markets and purchase vegetables and fruits Thousai<d>.of doliais ma> seem alot of money for the farm arc to gather from the autoists in the course of a year, but the money that changes hands in this manner easily runs into that amount. A ponespoudent in Ulk with several of the owners of these stands was told that in a uuinbri of cases the entire output of the farms ul several farmers were sold in this manner, and at a very much greatei profit than if the products had Itccu sold to commission merchants or peddled around the streets of the resorts. Inasmuch as the vegetables and fruit in these cases is always fresh and well appearing, they make a strung appeal to the motorist I housewife, and inasmuch as the prices in most cases are lower than store, the im]>ctus is too strong for the average perrtic County, in the interior, can also boost of thceuters feirmers in the same uihuiu-i , hut Csjkt May County, it aid, is far ahead of Atlantic County iu the disposal 01 om the farm to the consumer ” products.—Somem I\>int

To the Editor Cape May Co. Times: - I was much interested and pleased U read "Interested Visitor's" letter referring to Lady Venus. It is quite to the point, and if the writer had •y made his plea in the form of a motion I would be delighted to >nd it. But there is another proposition 1 flunk is of even greater importance. I shall not make a motion, however. until the sortiment of the meet—, . mesn community, has been expressed. What about having a public library n this town of nesrly s tho.aand inhabitants in wintar and many time* hat number in summer? Do yot 'cause that a public library it one of t town's roost important institutions hat it keep* a place in touch with the •utsids world probably better thai my other on* factor? Such a scheme would be far ahead of the present plan of having two little boxes of books loaned from the j
