TO THE EDITORS OF NEW JERSEY

AND OTHER STATES,

IN FAVOR. OF SUFFRAGE FOR WOMEN. Ia New jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware the amendment 1 the cunstituJion, giving or refusing the franchise to women yrll 6 voted noon this Fall. What b yonr stand in the matter ? You.arc, no doubt, swamped with mail from a dozen or more Women's Political Unions and Suffrage head- , giving countless reasons why women should vote. Every

‘ tnott face the same nuisance.

Bot is it not equally true that for every piece of snifrage iwtn.e that you receive through the mails and otherwise, there b one issued by some anti-uuioa, which is fighting the issue, and

demands that the vote be witbeld their sex ?

Which b right ? That is the question for yon to arswer, Mr. IfttfLor. Hew do you know that in advancing the interests of ■age through your newspaper you are doing a wise thing ? Why do you wub tc force upon countless thousands of women . a foamier they do not want? If yon are not convinced ‘hat a „ ,r of women want to vote—and as things exist at tbb time f you cannot be—how dare yon ignore the wishes and feelings of

| youx anriyreden ?

The greatest number of women in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware are sheltered and cared for, either by their parents or happily mafoed and fully occupied with a woman's real work, making a pleasant home. Oi the working women, a great majorit) arc working merely because their families are in moderate tircuniI wot able to provide the fiucry that the female heart de- ! the)- work in the department stores and in the factories rcnough -to^iu) these things for their physical adonunent. Il these women were granted a vote—and nearly all would lie riigtUr—what would they do with it? Thinking only of their new dress end the latest dancing steps, the fellow they met at the tango tea the evening before, and the latest flavor in chewing gum, is it yonr opinion that they should be given the right to cast a ballot to help decide the nation's affairs ? You have yet to be shown how women voting would better Sj: their soevd and industrial conditions. On the other hand, you have K positive proof that granting the women the ballot would disrupt our v entire present successful and prosperous working couditious. Have yon ever stopped to consider that the suffrage question, deep down at the very foundation, b only a question of “ wet ” or “dry”—whether or not the womru shall have the power to do ■what the men have refused to do, namely, produce national prohibition. Yon question thb, and say that it docs not enter into the

matter at all. Let us see.

You wiU admit that the antis are accused of being supplied with funds from the liquor interests. Presuming that thb is true, does that not prove on the face of it that the bsae is one pnrely of prohibition, and a battle Iwtwecn the two forces ? Speak to every mfiragbt yon meet, ask hu or her opinion on the national pioj hibitiem, and in ninety-nint oM of a hundred cases the advocate- of y women's vole will be for it. Mvic might be said on thb qnououc bat it is not needed, Mr. Bditot, if you will act squarely in the matter. If your mother or Be 'aistcr do not want to vote, there is no reason why you should f jrce K the balk* upon them. And when you say tliat they will not ha veto vote if they do not wish, you forget tliat every madam and bawdy house keeper, every dive owner and prostitute wiu. vote, and tosuit themselves Respectability will rub elbows with filth aud ini* moralitv—as has been proven in p.accs "V:c the franchise has

been granted the women.

Help defeat the ii*ue this fall It is to your interest and lhe interest of your State and tbb nation to do so, especially at thb time. The major portion of the women do not want to vote. If

they were to decide the question instead of the men this Fall, it’s • i* . j j odd.: 01 tea to one that the issue would be defeated by a much ClQSStfifd GuS. larger majority than it will as it now stands. * * ^
