HAPPINESS AND KINGS. "The aorld ia eo loll of a number of Uiin|>«, I’m at)re we alionld all be aa frapp; aa kinga.” | HIS couplet of Stevenson's has Itecome fatuous. It is simply, yet nobly expressed. The spirit that prompts one to write such lines so full of courage and contentment must be admired iu any man, and especially iu Stevenson ; tor lie wrote those lines, probably, lying in bed propped up by pillows, because he vnts wasting away with consumption. Here we have an example . of a man who refused to be disheartened even in adversity. 1 say “ even," because there arc many people who are not happyunder conditions which appear a good deal more favorable. Persons differ in their opinions of happiness. One may seek happiness in solitude, another in society ; one in reading, another in drinking ; one in prestige and honor, and another in accomplishments. King Solomon tells us that he sought bliss in everyone of the above-mentioned things but could not find if Tborean thought he could find contentment in solitude away from all worldly cares, where be could live and think freely without being a slave to the rest of the world. However, he considered one yeat of solitude enough. Carlyle says, "There is in man a higher titan love of happiness ; he can live without happiness, and instead thereof find blessedness. Love God ; this is the everlasting yea, wherein all contradiction is solved : wherein whoso walks, it is well with him.’’ So we sec that liappiness, like the “cogmogony of the world,” has troubled the philosophers of all ages. Now, when I said there are jieople who are unhappy under the rooat favorable circumstances, I meant kings. This does not lessen the value or the force of Stcvetisou's advice ; for if we but choose to be happy wc could make kings happy too. A crown means something moic than the gold or precious stones of which it is made. Immediately he dons the crown, the king is a slave. He is responsible for the life of every person in his domain. The safety and honor of his country lie in his hands. He must he the leader iu time of war, and lawmaker in time of peace. If he is benevolent and his country is prosperous as a result of his efforts, he is lauded to the skies. If otherwise, his subjects revile him. If lie is cruel, obstinate, haughty, and lets the people feel the yoke too much, he is a tyrant ■ the people rage; he is dethroned. There is a revolution. The king loses Ins head. Why? Because he had lost it sometime before. When the Children ol Israel asked Krhoboam to decrease the taxes which his father Solomon had heaped uj*on them, he said he would considei it. He asked the elders, “ How do vou advise that I may answer this people ’’ ? And they spoke unto him saying, “ If thou wilt be a setvant unto this (tropic this day and speak good words unto them, then will they be thy servants for ever." The king, liowevei, took the advice of the younger generation, which was just the contrary, and there was a revolution. Ittis ever thus. Many a king would gladly exchange his crown and toltes of ermine for the more bumble attire of almost any jiersou in his realm. When Alexander the Great, the world-wide conqueror, met Diogenes, the philosopher, who was satisfied to live in a tub in order to live iu peace and avoid worldly cares, Alexander said, “ If I were not Alexander, 1 would he Diogenes.” C:csar, What person lives under circumstances more happy than those of a king ? A king lacks nothing in all luxuries of life. His command is law. He is honored. He is aide to satisfy all his vanities. His children are provided for. Nevertheless, he is unhappv. Win - ? He wears a crown. Cromwell, Napoleon, Washington or Lincoln might have said the same. How many of us would like to take the place of Wilhelm II. of Germany, Cur Nicholas, Fran/ Joseph, Emanuel, Peter or Ferdinand, in their gtcat European struggle? 1 did not mention George V., because by his own definition he is a “dummy." There are good reasons to believe that the jealousies aud ambitions of some of these kings have caused this bloody war. If they have consciences, they must Ik- troubled by them. No our is surprised to hetr that the Kaiser of (k-iiuanv looks ten years older than at the lirginimig of the war. or that Cxmr Nicholas is in daily feai of a revolt. Their lives, their crowns, their countries are all at stake. Nunc will Ik- surprised if the war ends with the alndishment of crowned heads in Euro|>r. However, we have no crowns to lose, .rod jet, uncrowned as wc arc, wc arc bcitrt off than drive aw**\ worn and say with Stevenson,
