ART NOT ACQUIRED BY ALL i FORGET DATE HAS CHANGED RACCOONS WASH THEIR FOOD

RMlIy Proficient Nagger la Bom 80, but Accomplishment Is One That Can Be Acquired. Nagging ynur husband la a special art by Itself, and while some women bare a natural gift In that direction, others can only acquire It by constant application. A husband In a house is something like a hippopotamus. Be Is often a dull, placid creature, hard to move or dislodge, especially If he gets accustomed to a favorite chair. He often becomes toughened by exposure to constant nagging, and it takes a powerful weapon with a fairly high trajectory to do him any damage. Occasionally. however, he develops sensitive areas, and can become a constant source of pleasure to any lady who likes to nag. Every woman knows, of course, that her husband Is more susceptible about half an h nir before dinner, when he has come home from the office tired opt. By studying him carefully she will discover o-rtaln days In the month when she can nag him with the highest percentage of bull's-eyes. The art of nagging, however. Is not all objective. Much <-nn be done from the subjective standpoint. By intlniat Ing to her hnslmnd In many trays, which she can easily learn by practice. that she I* the most abused lady on earth, she can derive a whole program of amusement. The historical method—that of dragging up some dead, forgotten thing and talking about U all over again, and still over again—Is also a splendid form of nagging. Some wives, however, so blind are they, never see tills at all. They Just *o on. hopefully trying to make their husbands happy. The high art of nagging la not given to every woman.— Life.

PECULIARITY OF WATER LILY Plant Produces an Oil Which Prevents Moisture Remaining on Ita Leaves and Blossoms. Slow-moving rivers, ponds and lakes are the habitat of a flower which, at most everybody knows. Is the water hly. Did you ever know what gave the leaves and blossoms of the “water nymoh” their shining appearance? It la due to an oil which prevents water remaining on them and clogging th« little mouths, or stomachs, through which the plant breathe:. The leaves are large, flat and nearly round. The blossoms are very showy measuring. In our common Americac species, nearly six Inches across. In color they are white, pink and yellow Water lilies are particular about tht weather In which they bloom. On fine warm days the flowers open In tht morning and close at night, but oc dull, chilly days the flower does not venture forth. One member of the family, Victoria regia, which grows 'u South America has a leaf six to twelve feet broad with a curiou rim that gives It a lraylike nppet v ice. The leaves are stroui enough to hold two men.

Office Man la Safest Risk. Do yon know how much risk of In Jnry or death there is In yonr dally occupation? The actuary of the state workmen's compensation department has It ail figured out lu dollars and

cent*.

The man who takes the least risk is the man employed In office work, such as a bunk clerk. Office employees are rated at a premium of II cent! on each $100 for the aggregate |my roll of the Uistltntlon by which they are employed. Newspap. r unn are rated at IH cents on the fluo. This includes all brunches of the newspaper huaiuess, representing a chance of IK In 1.000 that a newspaper man will be killed or Injured in tin line of duty. Tin- Ugures indicate that a window cleaner takes his life In his bunds every time he crawls around on the outside of a building letting the daylight lu. He Is rated at $4,115 |ht $100. The highest premium rate Is JS-'tS, on the prof cantonal wrecker, who runs the risk of having a brick building full on him. Tha Cots wolds. The Cotswolds are another example of the variety of natural scenery that England succeeds In |nicking away within In-r narrow sentiartvd boundaries. Here, within tnn-e hours of the largest rity lu the world, you ran walk in complete loneliness, over a grassy rued that follows the route laid cot by Kcinuu engineers, with a tutubled skyline of r»iil mountains on your right, and n sweep of empty fields falling away to the left. That Be Many Forgot to Write “1917" Prove* That Man Is Creature of Habit “That man Is a creature of habitremarked the secretary of a large business firm, “Is amply demonstrated by the letters we receive. Tills letter which I hold In my band contains an error generally made at this time of the year, not because tbe writers are careless but because they have cultivated the habit of writing a certain thing mechanically. “During the life of the year now expired the writers had grown accustomed to putting down the numerals 1918. Itoubtless at first It required effort on their part to bear In mind that the last figure of the set was 0 and not 5, but after a time the writing of 6 became a Mechanical act rather than a mental act. It became second nature for them to write the date correctly. “With the birth of a new year, however. t!m* mechanical writers must exert mental effort. When they don't they err. Take this case, for Instance. You see the writer has turned out what he considers a perfect letter. He probably reread It and sealed It satisfled that It was correct. But he never thought to look at the date, at least the year part of it. The result is that instead of dating It January, 1917, he has dated it January, 1918. Just a mechaulcul error. Unit's all. “A peculiar phase of the matter is Unit the error is usually made by persons who write their own correspondence. esjH-clally In long hand. Stenographers who are paid to write the corres|>ondence of others on typewriters have developed the habit of being accurate.”

PUT BLAME ON BERRY JUICE Old Seadogs Seemingly Vindicated When the Beat Waa Given Temperance Christening. When fourteen-year-old Myrtle Knndson smashed a botUe of loganberry Juice against the stem of the four-masted auxiliary schooner Alpha, first of Ute •■hullt-ln-Portland'' fleet, she caused a lot of old seadogs to shake their heeds with misgiving, but signalieed a victory for the W. C T. C. Pleas that champagne be used, according to Ume-honored custom, availed not, but a moment later the seafarers were saying. “I told you so." and few there were who could gainsay them. The Alpha started sliding down the ways toward the river, when suddenly there was a grating noise and the vessel came to a dead stop, stuck tight and every effort on the part of the engineers availed nothing. The old seadogs wouldn't blame the ways. They insist It was all the fault of the loganberry Juice.—Spokane Spokesman-Re-view.

To Protect Moose. The secretary of agriculture at Washington has issued the following amendment to the regulations for the protection of pane in Alaska, with the object of protecting moose and mountain sheep on the Kenul peninsula and adjoining region in Alaska, the New York Herald says: 'The sale of carcasses or parts thereof of moose and sheep In the region south of latitude ttl degrees north and between longitude HI degree* west and the western outlet of Lake Clark, lu longitude 155 degrees west, or the shipment of carcasses or parts thereof of said animals for sale from Anchorage, Reward or other points on tht Keual peninsula, is hereby prohibited until October 1. 1918. and no carcaaaet or parts thereof of said animals ahull oe accepted for shipment to other I>oluts in Alaska unless accompanied by affidavit of the owner that they were not purchased and are not Intended for sale."

Curious Habits of a Typically Known Air.tucan Ani-nal Are a Most Interesting Study. Few- American wild animals are more widely known or excite more |M>puiar Interest than the raccoon, which occupies most of the wooded parts of North America from the southern leirder of Canada to Panama, with the exception of the higher mountain ranges. Their diet is extraordinarily varied, and Ineludra fresh-water clams, crawfish. frogs, turthni, birds and their eggs, poultry, nuts, fruits aud green corn. When near water they have a curious and unique habit of washing their food before eating It. Their fondness for green corn leads them Into frequent danger, for when bottom-land corn tempts them away from their usual haunts raccoon hunting with dogs at night become* an especially favored sport. lUccuomt are extraordinarily Intelligent animals aud make Interesting aud amusing pets. Raccoons began to figure lu our frontier literature at an early date. “Coonskln” caps, with the ringed tails hanging like plumes, made the favorite headgear of many piooeer hutit-rs, and “coonskins” were a recognised article of barter at country stores. Now that the Increasing occupation of the country Is crowding out more aud more of our wild life. It Is a pleasure to note the persistence with which these characteristic and Interesting animals continue to hold their own In so much of their original range.

AVOID SPREAD OF DISEASE Point of Importance la That Sick Chib • dren Should Not Associate With

Their Playmates.

That the general public, especially the uneducated public, has no knowledge of the danger of the commoner diseases of chlldbooj aud no appreelaUon of the peril of letting ailing little ones associate with others at school and Sunday school, is the assertion of the New York Medical Journal. “Parents should be shown.” It says, “not only that their children are dangerous to others, but that the reverse

Is true.”

The fear of having the house placarded and quarantined leads nmny parents to conceal a child's Illness, sending word to school that it has chicken-pox, for Instance, when really It may have small-pox, tonaUUUu or even diphtheria. They do not summon a doctor, and for the same reason. What Is needed Is a campaign to educate parents as well as children to a wholesome dread of sick playmates and to a realization of their duty tc keep their own sick little ones away from their neighbors' well ones.
