Until tbe outbreak of tbe European war, however, tbe American beet sugar Industry was almost entirely dependent for Its seed supply upon Europe. Since'that time efforts have been made to Increase tbe production of sugar beet seed In tbe United State*, but tb- supply la still so limited that several American beet sugar factories were idle last year for this reason. These roots are planted at tbe earliest jKisslble time tbe following spring and rapidly produce aesd stalks from three to six feet to height Tfctee are harvested with a sickle at tbe proper^ time .afi-1 tbe seed invested, vVsnrd aud cured.
