You’re- Wrong Mr. Blackwell Oliver.L Blackwell, President of the County Tta Board, is.now editor,or acting in tharcapacity, for the Wildwood “Sun”, recently purchased by the count}' Democrats from Ex-Shenff William
H. Bright.
We have high regard lor Mr. Blackwell; he is an adept at figures, and an authority on County real estate values, as he should be,occupying the position he does. But like some other of the Wildwoodians, who have not yet become converted to the thoughts ol progress and advancement unless Wildwood gets the immediate benefit, Mr. Blackwell will occasionally burst forth in print with some statements, while not untrue, wiU be colored to suit the occasion. For instance in a couble.column front page editorial in the “Sun.'’ of last Saturday, the following appears: “WE COME IN ALL RIGHT—BUT DO YOU MEAN TO RUB IT IN ALSO? “The following article appeared in last week's issue of the Sea Isle City ‘Review’ Oand effects the interests of the section of the county referred to so vitally that it should be answered in such a way that *11 will understand how we come in, ana who pays the freight while we are getting in: “ ‘The Cape May County Board of Freeholder; has awarded to Champion & Powell, of Ocean C : ty, the contract to build the Ocean City, Corson's Inlet boulevard, on a bid of *127,393. Where is Cape May City and the lower part of the county coming in ?’ “We are ‘in’ to pay 'out' *92,4x9.41 of the above amount -nd to this must be added extra* on building the bridges and interest - on the bond issue until they are paid 0$ w hi ) will add more than *4,000 a year for several years to come. “The lower cud 01 count} will pay on our present taxable valuations the loliowiug amounts, sir:

South African war alone the late laxd Roberts of F.ngtaad receired from para grant of nearly $300,000 in n money, added to that, an was conferred upon him. and be was made a Knight of the Garter and appointed commander In chief of
the army.
this followed tne reward of aome SUSJOu for his services in Afghani! dormc which be made the famous march in twenty-one days from Kabul Kandahar, which is still a Table' amoog the men of the army. The late Lord Kitchener alao an fortune by bis successful campaigning, parhameut awarding him $230,000 for Ins aerrice in South Africa and later adding to that $150.0f*> for smashing the khalifa in the Sudan, for which feat be also received his seal in the
bouse of lords.
The Use Lord Woiaeley receired from parliament $200,000 at vanooa t and was also given a seat lr the b of lords for his triumphe 00 the battle-C-id. notably during the Ast*ntl war. But it was the Duke of Wellington whose victories brought in the great eat spalls. It having been estimated that his fighting resulted in a fortune

“Mr. TAxpayer. you will be several year.older before you get through paying this uiogc:hceiit sum of money, hot rir. you will'J haw the de «atat:oa that comm with ardu-
ous toil, and will grow old gracefully thiongh the years that axe to come. “Yea, yon are ‘coming in’ and before yon get ‘out’ you men that are near middle life will have reached the end of your journey, and will not be concerned about such hariassing things as bridges and taxes.” • In the first place, tlie article that yon quote from, Mr. Blackwell, as taken I row the Sea Isk City “Review,” appeared in that newspaper by mistake. The “Review ” like every other sensible newspaper in this Roabcad part of the County (apologies to the progteariwea 0! Wildwood and Cape May) is heartily »*» favor of the Corson's Inlet Boulevard, and ia fact the .nine Ocean Boulevard. At the present time the “Review” is being printed at a Cepe May City office, and the article which you so aptly quote, appeared in tie Cape May “Star and Wave" originally, and was picked up as a “filler" and run in the “Review” without the knowledge and consent ot its owners or editors. We say this on the best au-
thority.
Now then, Mr. Blackwell, in your summary of just how much Sea Isk City and Avalon and Stone Harbor and the rest of this part of the County must pay of the bond issue, you imply that these resorts are unwilling to pay this Additional tax. This is entirely wrong. On the contrary, we venture to say that if a vote of every taxpayer were taken, the great majority would be in favor of the expenditure, and would be more than willing to pay the extra tax. WhV, Mr. Blackwell, did you forget to figure what portion Ocean City would pay? The ratables of Ocean City, you know, arc *9,255,163; more by over *wo million dollars tlian your own city of Wildwood. If then, Wildwood City vould pay *25,30X.88, why leave out the *32,392.97 that Ocean City would contribute ? And while you're figuring it up. jnst figure how much Ocean City wll contribute ou hex nine million valuation to the *93,000 Holly Beach turnpike bond issue. And the *30,000 for the Richardson's Channel bridge, and rebuilding the Holly Beach 1-ridge. Lets see— *92,000 for yoyr road, and *30.000 for your bridges is *X2$x»o—why that's almost as ‘much as the CoraouS Inlet bridge will cost isn’t it Mr KlackwelL And then figure how much Sea 1«V City and all the other resorts and the townships all along the line will pay for the privilege of the “superlative pleasure of occasionally riding over the bard surfaced road and the bridge, if they chahce to be in your oeighborliood.’’ From your experience on the tax board, also Mr. Blackwell, figure bow much the land, dead and practically valueless until this road is built, will increase arid how ranch return the County will get from this increase toward helping pay the bill Won’t you just guess at, and publish these figures? Don’t stop hal' way, Mr. Blackwell. That’s not the way you do things
we know.
By the way, Mr. Black veil, where do you get the figure of thirty-five cents per hundred increase iu taxes? We are so certain that you would
not deliberately misquote or juggle figures, Rurtoo. tw Dak* of Weiuar.oo. retbat it supriset us that you did not find that an ulna • 6ere> 10 t Lood '®' P*** 1 *" 4 r , , EoxAud wltfc tbe problem of how increase of thirty-five cents, as you say. would nwaltl The b. ran* Ohfc Hl'KbX£l> AKL> SlXTY-THkfcE TlXOt> l • fomme hsd strewdr

not, that carry ing charges, sinking fund, etc., on the Corson'* Inlet Bridge bond issue would amount to only *15,500 a year, for fifteen years. And from your wide experience in tax matters, you K.NEW that the actual increase iu taxes per hundred dollars valuation would be less than Focb Costs, and not thirty-five. Iu o^ber words, the man that owns a property assessed *t three thousand dollars would pay NINETY Cents a year towrard these bonds. Wouldn't have to sell $o many extra pecks of joutoes at
that, would we Mr. Blackwell ?
And while we are speaking ol bridges, and your opposition to them, we fully expect you to register a rigorous objection to the tv'.meeting link from Wildwood to Cape Ma\.ac:*-s Two 1 Mile Beach, with a bridge over Cold Spring InI let, sor which the plans were approved by the | Freeholders last Saturday. Gel busy now, Mr. j Blackwell. That bridge ha> not yet l>cen sUrj ted. and there still time for your pitiless publi- ' city to prevent its ever being built—or at least for some lime, and then, maybe, the wanly will te richer and better able to finance without j makmg Ocean City, and Sea Isle Crtv and a few I mote of us in this part of the Countv jay more i than two-thirds of the cost of it. tut the privilege | of riding over it if we should ever chance to be]
