To Uphold the Law CoimnisMonci Dill, head of the Stnic Motor Vehicle l>c{>artmet:t. a* ‘.ate u» Titodav o! this week made the *t-tc;i.c!H to n Cape May County uan. that anv pervm whi- diivcs an automobile taster than twenty-five miles an bout is “nitting with death/' and that reckless .nd speedy driving must l>e stopped. We have no desire * > . ■mn’enance reckless driving. On the coutraiv. .cenlireh agree with Mr. Dill. Rut the ?ad accident to one of Mr. Dill's inspector*. J A. G. Grant, at Ocean View onTucsdav. would seem that in the motor vehicle department it is a ease of doing one thing and preaching another, for according to eye-witnesses to the accident, it wa> caused entirely by the reckless manner and the great speed at which Inspector Grant uas driving his high-powered car. Last Saturday, at Mr. Dill's order. Inspector Giant revoked the license of an Ocean City driver because on one occasion he was late tor a tr^sn and let his car out to thirty-five mile* an hour. On the Tuesdav following. Giant bimaelf approached and crossed a dangerous railroad crossing a*, a speed ' not less than ntty miles an hour. That, too. without stopping to ‘'Look and 1 istcti," a> the law require*, when be neared

had he done this, the accident would not hewe occured. Tbe affair ghould be sufficient to cauie the State Department to investigate doarh and pat a stop for once and all lime to the v iolaUMa of all speed laws by the employees of that department an occurrence that is by no me ans a rare one. Buying Food Prof. R. D. Maltby. head of the vocational schools oi Atlantic County, addressing an audience the other night declared that if the people would use the telephone less for their marketing and do their buying direct from the farmer or their regular dealer they would get better goods and enjoy the advantages of lower prices. While there is undoubtedly some merit in a conteution of this kind, it docs not appeal to one as being altogether sound. What is to prevent a person from buying as economically and as well over the telephone from a reliable dealer as by going to the store in person? asks the Atlantic City Press. If a householder desires a beef roast, for example. there is no reason why the same price, for the various cuts shouldn’t be quoted over the phoi e as to the intending purchaser in pgrson at the store. The same is true of a basket of potatoes and most o'her commodities. Of course the hous. holder who visits a store is frequently able to pick up bargains that the purchaser over the phone never sees, and as a consequence is better able to promote economy in the management of the home, but it is doubtful if the saving effected in this manner is sufficient to warrant the time a busy householder would be required to expend in making frequent trips to a store. Time is sometimes money to women as well as to men. And the telephone is the best time saver on earth. Prof Maltby also declared in the course of his address that householder?, could save money bypurchasing direct from the farmer. Possibly they could; but meat and provision dealers are necessary members of a business community. Thev could not be dispensed with, no matter how much consumers purchased from farmers direct: Moreover, they must live as well as others. Their calling is legitimate and absolutely necessary to the welfare of a community. For the public to make a practice of purchasing its foodstuffs direct from the fanner in an effort to save a few pennies would not only be manifestly unfair to the dealers, who would still be found invaluable to consumers on occasion, but highly disastrous to the business community in general
