As long as nothing luppencd Grant’s driving was accepted as a matter ol course, and nothing was said or done. That is the great American failing—to defer action until something HAS HAPPENED, instead ol pi eventing it from happening by providing proper safeguards, rightly enforcing safety laws. In Grant's case the • omethiug has happened, and it is to his everlasting gtx>J luck that a number of innocent persons were not the victims of his recklessness. physically fit, those who are not employed in producing some of the necessities of the country and those who have no dependent fanilies. will be called for service. There is no excuse that can be maue acceptable for not registering. Nor should there be. Every man 21 years of age and up to thirty inclusive, must registar. If he is sick and cannot personally register, some one else must do so for him. If he is away from his own town, he is compelled to obtain registration cards from the officials of tbe town in which he is residing, and forward them properly filled out to the mayor of his home town. The polling places of the various election districts will be the places for registration, and the election boards, after proper instruction and serving without pay, will conduct it Don’t forget that the day is next Tuesday, j and if yon arc between the ages of 21 and 30, | both inclusive, you MUST register—in jierson, I by mail, or through another person. 1 The penalty for failure to register is a year in j jail. With the present fine spirit of patriotism I manifest it is safe to assume that there will be lew- who will try to dodge their duty as American citizens in this respect. Is Our Coast Safe ? I Here arc s :ne fi tires that should relieve the minds ol the few who Mill may have r. lingering ! doubt as to the safety of our Cape May County 1 Coast iu case ofan attack bya belligerent country. The depth of the Atlantic Ocean off our coast three miles is four fathoms; at five miles it is five and one-half fathoms; at eight miles eight fathoms; at ten miles nine fathoms; at twelve miles ten to twelve fathoms. (A fathom is six feet of watfr.) It requires sixty leet of water for a submarine to submerge, and thirteen feet to run on the surface. A simple process of arthinetic shows that a submarine could not possibly approach our coast any closer than twelve miles: And at twelve miles a submarine is as harmless as a pound net fishing boat. The newspaper war fright and talk of the danger to our coast is a myth, and only a very few people will be foolish enough to deprive themselves of their usual coast visit on account of this. The refusal of President Wilson to allow Theodore Roosevelt to recruit an army for France cannot but make ordinary folks think that the President placed practical politics before practical patriotism. Had Roosevelt failed in recruiting his force, the U. S. would have been nothing out; had he succeeded, he would have gotten together without cost to the government an army that the war dejiartment to duplicate must sj»ciid several millions of dollais. In war tines that saving would have been something, says the New Jersey Courier. Nor did it comtf with very good grace for men who sit safely at home in well jxiid jobs to accuse the ex-president of seeking glory or political advantage in offering to go to France as a subordinate u:a. -umv .aised by the magic of his name. It is not very easy to question the ]iatriolism of a man who offers himself and his four boys as volunteers for the very first overseas army, when those who sneer at his )iatriotism are taking good care of their own precious skins. No wonder Congressman Mann poiulrd out as in vital contrast to Roosevelt’s offer, the position of the Ifresidcnt’s son-in-law, Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo, who son is reported as coinmis- ' Moiled to command the Vauderbiit yacht Adrift, | offned to the government with the stipulation that she is to be used iu the coast defence naval ; lexerve, but is not to go outside of Maryland I waters. Just why the Fict-liolders should insist on tisiug the I’ittsbuigh patented load paving I material known as “Bitoslag" on the Main Sea- ! shore Road is llaid to uudeistaud, when concrete has pttnen cheapo, more durable and is open to competitive bidding. While it is true that the State depaitmcut | lias said that this paving may be acceptable to ; them for the extension of State aid, the same was said by them of the "Warieuite” that the Atlantic County Board ol Fu-elvddeis had concluded louse on the White Horse,pike-—but which | they arc not using on account of the violent pn»- | test from the business intcirMs of tbe CotUttv, I ami ?ubsequent limit action.
