After Four Weeks The new Sea Isle City Commissioners have been in harness lour weeks. In that time they have cut t.owu their own s.ibuk< to effect a saving of a tidy Slim, and have held lout inertings. It is yet to catlv to commend 01 londcinu any official action they have taken, if lot or no other reason than that tiny luv. taken so few. From present indications the new u 'uu- . '...ition will be one ol rigid economy and saving in every possible way and tendency is to meet the taxpayers half way in anything that is worthy. There arc a few matters, however, that must be taken in hand at once, and which delay will hinder. One of these is the public band concerts for the season. Another is City advertis- - iug. A third is the issuing the monthly statement of the proceedings ol the Commissioners, as required by law. Today is June 8th. The summer season will be thoioughly started by the time the Com- . miasioncts meet again, and it no action is taken then on the matter ol music, it is more than likely that no action will be jxrssiblc. The same applies to City advertising. Both ate highly important. One of the fust rules of business is to advertise the commodit) and then make the puichasei satisfied with it_ and so crraU re-utdets, where, when everything is said and done, the leal piolil lies. We are in the buaiuess > 1 being a seashore result. We must advertise mu business to bring the people here, and we mu 1 create the amusements Out Mill make them content and glad they came, and nuke them want to came again In this lies to tbe success of the resort. Economy i» commend.ble. Thetc is far to much waste iu the conduct of public aliaiis. But there is such a thing as carrying even economy too lat, and the elimination ol a baud and city advertising would lie just that. When these matters were first s]»okcu of, the TIMES reliaincd from any ccmnicnt, pieieting to wait until after the municipal election. The uratlci must be takcu up now, or never. Every other commissiou governed city in the
State except Sea Isle City complies with that section of the Commission Government law which requires that the City Commissioners publish in book form, or in a newspaper, the proceedings of their body on the first of each month. This statement mast contain every official act of the Commissioners, afld every bill that has been paid, to whom aud the amount thereof. The object is to allow every taxpayer to see. under the official seal of the City, just what has been done during any mouth or year, and like everything else in Commission Government, it is designed to prevent any secrecy in municipal affairs. This statement has never been published in Sta Isle City. It must be started now, if the taxpayers arc to have complete confidence in the City’s governing body. The first month lias passed—the first statement is ready. Its publication is necessary.
Join the Red Cross in every community in the County branches of the American Red Cross Society arc being formed for the purpose of equipping base hospitals for war use. Members are needed to help in the work, supply the needed materials, and furnish the need finances, and it is the patriotic duty of every American citizen to lend his moral and financial support to the organization. In time of war the Red Cross cares for all the w ounded in the field of battle, supplies medical aid and cares for tbe injured until their complete recovery. Schools arc established by this wonderful humanitarian organization to teach maimed soldiers useful occupations so that upon their discharge as cured they will not be left helpless and without means of support, to become burdens on the conntrv In times of peace it is the Red Cross tliat is looked to for help* in any casualty, such, for instance, as recently befell the munition factory at Eddystone. In the great Chicago lire, the San Francisco earthquake, the Galwston flood, it was tfie Red Cross that helped restore calm and ■ quiet out of the chaos and confusion, and who looked after the injured. The organization receives no goveriiment aid, though its work is under governmental control and direction. Its officets and managers, men of affitirs and big men in the business world, serve without pay, and have built up a wonderful national organization. The movement is purely one of charitv, established for a charitable purpose, and depending 011 charity for its sustainence. Especially in these troubled times should every person, man or woman, help the Red Cross. There is a branch in your town, a Chapter in your County. Join, aud join tod iy. Give what you can. One dollar makes you a member; one hundred gives ypu a sustaining membership and other memberships can be had for most any sum between these. There 1:0 age limitations, and no physical qualification--. The door is wide open, and every true American will want to get in.
An Assembly Triangle The first move in the County political game has been takcu. The political bee bus been buzzing for the past month, and has already inoculated three aspirants for the office of Assembly, which is to be filled at the No\ember election, aud which comes up at the September primaries. They are C. E. Stille, cf Tuckahoe, who w ill be a candidate to succeed himself; Mark Lake, of Ocean City, who served the County in the Assembly during the 1915-16 term, and Harry Bright, of Wildwood, the most recent entry. The three are Republicans, though Bright still sticks to his Progressiva tendencies. The Democratic candidate, or candidates, have not yet announced themselves. There may lie more get into the fight, which like all other elections is a frce-lor-oll. And it is yet too early to pick a choice, though wc may liavc our |K.-i.sonal friendships aud beliefs as to who would make tbe best man for the job. Stiaugc (though it may seem, the office to which fewest aspire and the one in which there i- least ■•outest, is the most desirable to filled this year. It is that of Surrogate of the County, a $2500 job, with a four year tcirn. So tar only one candidate has deviated himself for this job, aud he is James T. Hoffman, of West Cape Mav, a Republican. It is expected, of course, that Surrogate Rice W’ll be u candidate to succeed himself. lit his tribute to Alexander Hamilton, Hamel Webster said: “He smote the rock of the national resources aud abundant streams of revenue gushed foith. He touched the dead corpse of public credit aud it sprang upon its fecL” McAdoo can’t seem to find the right rods, and he is better at manipulating net balances than at galvanising public credit.
