Again We Say, Play Sale The summer season is upou us, aud like every other summer season the joy aud gladness of its arrival at the shore is itam]>cucd by the knowledge that as ccitaiu as the rising of the sun aud the coming of the season itself, a certain numbei of vacationists will m ver teturu to their homes alive- but will jay the toll of folly aud over-estimaud >tieugih while bathiug aloug oui shores. The sea demands its animal toll ol bather*. If i>ot in one way, a certain jA-rccutagc will loose toeir lives in auothei way, this year, as in every otbery year. See that Y(Jc play safe, aud don’t let it get you. We have issued a warning note at this season for several year* joist, and have always repeated that of the drowning* on the South Jctscy coast, nine out or every ten could have beeu avoided. Bithei some loolhaidy bather swim* out too far, aud is taken with a cramp. Ot dive* off a pier, not kuowuing the dangers of broken piling or shallow water that lay under the calm surface. Or swim* around the pier supporters, or bulkheads, aud is carried by the breakers aud dashed against the pilings aud rendered helpless. Aud *0 on.au tmem. Iu every case a realisation that the Ocean is slrougcr, 1 tgger and greater tliau man, would have saved a life. The sooner that people icalue that the Ocean is meant to bath in, and not to swim in. the aooncr will come the day when a talili.y liom drowning will l»r unknown. We venture that life guards would be out of a job in one season, and life boat-, and beach hospital tents would bo relegated t<> the scrap heap, if vacationist* would be satisfied with lathing, aud would not insist on swimming out to dangerous depths in old Ocean. Another j>oint well r.-nicmt»eiing, is not to bathe immediately atlcr a mew. It « always saint to waif an hour or so. Aud lemember that bathiug it not ouly safer, but al*) most
pleasant at high tide. The beach is uncovered at low tide, and every inch of the exposed strand is washed smooth end firm, and is familiar to the bather. This not true of the beach beyond the low water line.
Death ot Judge Voorbees The death of former County Judge Harrison H. Voorbees marks the passing of one of the most familiar and popular personages Cape May County has ever known. Soon after his entry into County affitirs in 1892, his ability and powerful personality was recognized, aud he became a strong factor in the political life of Five Mile Beach, where he made his home nine months in the year. Mr. Voorbees was an ardent sportsman, and a strong devotee of fishing and yachting, and it was perhaps this natural love of the water aud its finny inhabitants that ied him to specialize in maritime law, in which he was exjjert. With his genial personality and ever-presen goodfellowship, Mr. Voorhes, was perhaps the best known and most successful attorney practicing in the County courts. In 1901 he was appointed Judge of the Cornmen Fleas Court of the County, and was Citysolicitor of Anglos£2 and Holly lieach when they were seperatc municipalities, and later of \\ ildwood, when the two towns were merged. He also served Sea Isle City as solicitor for four years until May 8th of this year. Hundreds ot sincere friends mourn his untimely and sudden death. Stale To Build It A difierent aspect was placed upon the agitation for the Beeslcy’s Point to Somers Point bridge last week, when Reuben Clouting, of Upper Township, stated that the plan was to have the structure built and financed by the State, out of the proceeds of the Edge road law tax. The Chamber of Commerce, before who the statement was made, very promptly and properly endorsed the building of the bridge, by the Stole and without help from either Atlantic or Cape May Counties. If it can be built that way, well and good. It will not affect the county treasury, which is taxed severely enough, goodness knows, without the additional burden of building a bridge that is not of prime importance at tbis time. How can any man be weak who dares to be at all ? Even the tenderest plants force their way up through the hardest earth and the crevices of rock, but a man no material power can resist. What a wedge, what a beetle, what a catapult, is an earnest man! What can resist him ?—Thoreau.
There has been and there still is some discussion as to what we should term our soldiers in France by way off affectionate nick name. Something like the English “Tommy” is sought, and “Sammies”, and “Teddies” bavt been nominated. No one has yet risen to suggest in seriousness that they should be called “Woodies.”

A dispatch from Seattle, Wash., announces the departure from that city of 40 tank cars each containing 8000 gallons cf soy beau oil, consigned to Ivorydale, Ohio, to be used in soap making. The oil was imported by Mitsui & Co., Japanese importers of Seattle, and a subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., of Tokio. Japan. Soy bean* and soy bean oil arc on the free list of the juesent tariff law. With a protective rate on the beans and the oil, the growing of the former would be encouraged in this country aud the southern cottonseed oil mills would have plently of work to do during an otherwise dull jieriod. A protective rate on the oil would insure a good home market for these mills, and a product whose possibilities arc being appreciated would be “Made in
Anict ica.”
There may be two sides to the con trovers-, between Gen. Gocthals and the men whom Chairman Dentnau chose to work on the plan for a merchant fleet But the public will see ouly ouc side of it. They know Goethals. They do not know Eusiis aud Clark—aud they are ouly just coming to know Denman. Goethals is a man who does things. Ifeutuan and E-rstis and Clark me men -who evidently prefer to talk about doing thi-'gs. Tbcfe are too many like them in jdaces of responsibility at Washington already. The administration cannot afford to have this issue accentu »ted. There is a growing belief in the country now that things are not as they should be in Wa aJuugtou. The Goethab incident will frtiength rn this opinion.
