Strong efforts are being made by friend* of Mathew Jefferson, former Prosecutor of the Pleas of Cape M*> County, to secure his release from Slate Prison, where he commenced his term on Tuesday of Ihla week. The following is the text of a petition which Is being clrcnDted In every portion of the County: To His Excellent}-, the Governor. His Honor, the Chancellor, and the Honorable Judgea of the Court of Errors and Appeal*. Comprising the New Jersey Court of Pardons: We. whose names are subscribed hereto are citizens of New Jersey and know Mathew Jefferson, former Procaculur of the Pleas of Cape May County, this State, and know of the offence charged against him and of which he was

convicted.

We believe that already he has been sufficiently punished, and that any period of confinement In the State's Prison would serve no useful purpose so far as bjf reformation is concerned, aa we believe already he has fully delermlned to lead a correct life. Nor do we believe mat a lengthy confinement is necessary m hi* ca*e for the purpose of Its deterrent effect upon 'other*. Since hi* conviction and suspension as a member of the Bar he has ceased the prsct.ce of lawand has been constantly employee In an honorable pursuit. V.*e therefore earnestly pray that he may be promptly pardoned and released from prison. Mathew Jefferson waa tried on charge of malfeasance In office, ar was convicted two yiars ago After carrying the case to the higher courts, the Court of JErrors and Appeals handed down a decision sustaining the lower courts, about two weeks ago. and Mr. Jefferson decided not to carry It to the Supreme Court. Jefferson wa* disbarred from the practice of law after his conviction His sentence is from eighteeen months

to three years.

Mathew Jefferson has many warm friends in Cape May County who re-

him through his trou-

ble and they propose to leave no atomunturned to secure bit syredy pardon
