THE BOltOL'GH OF STRATHMERE No true progrc.ss was ever made by any of the County resorts until they became self-gov-erned. Each of the thriving municipalities that line the County’s seaboard were at one time or another part of a township, and their municipal affairs controlled by the Township Committee. With the natural growth of the resorts, the limitations of their township government became apparent, and one after the other applied for and were granted Borough chatters, and later City charters, and wuh their self-government, became the great resorts they now are. Strathmere is the only remaining resort in Cape Idav County that is still under township government, it being part of Upper Township. No argument can be advanced to ahow why Sea Isle City’s nearest neighbor should not become a Borough; it has ample taxable real estate to finance itself; it has the men able and capable of administering the Borough’s affairs and has every advantage that the other self-governed resorts enjoy, and more besides. Strathmere cannot, and never will, emerge from its present stage unless it lias a new pulsating force behind it Borough go\er*nent— government by the people of Strathmere for the people of Strathmere—will supply tills force, and lend a new impetus to the growth and development of the place. The slight increase in the taxes of the Borough would be more than off-set by greater real c.->late values, and more building development, as has been the case with every other resort in the County, bar none. The most recent change from Township to Borough Government was made at Stone Harbor four years ago. and in the four years that Stone Harbor has governed itself there nas been ten times as much real improvement and advancement than in ail the previous years of township government. Ahd with ii all, Stone Harbor enjoys a tax rate lower I nlay than it ever was. City improvements considered. What was done at Stone Harbor can be done at Strathmore. There is ample room for development and many civic improvements are needed for the comfort and convenience of the residents. which will never be had with things as they now are. The H<>rough of Strathmere would lose nothing by the change. It would GAIN recognition a* a County resort; it would govern itself; it would have its own Mayor and Councilmen, its own school directors; its own powers to grow

THE COUNTY FAIR. The dates of the Cape May County Fair this year are October 6th and 6th. Every resident of the County should mark these two datps in his memory, or better still in his note book, with a notation that on one, or both, of the dates, he will go to Cape May Court House and attend the fait. here is no. one institution that works for such great good as the County fair. Competition, it is said, is the life of trade, but Competition at the County Fair is the very life and liackbone of our agricultural interests, causing the farmers to put forth their best efforts to capture the honors for growing the finest produce in the various classes for which prizes are offered, and so raising the entire standard of their farms and their methods of farming. For the resorts, the addition of the exhibition of the work, and prizes for the school children, is a great incentive for interest in their school work. And withal, the County fair is interesting and instructive to all who attend. It deserves support, and it was probably a realization of this that caused the County Freeholders to contribute $1,000 to help finance the enterprise, and recoup the losses of the few men who have so loyally and unselfishly worked to make the continuation of the annual Fair possible. Don’t fail to attend this year.

MARK LAKE AND PAUL CARROLL. With Primary Election leas than three weeks away, the candidacy of Paul Carroll on the Republican ticket for Surrogate, and Mark Lake for Assembly, i« getting stronger each day) Paul Carroll, through his clean-cut campaign of the laitt few weeks, has gained many friends throughout the County who recognize in him k HucceMiful. energetic business man and loyal Republican. Mr Carroll" was a candidate for the Shrievalty nomination last Fall, and although defeated by his opponent at the Primary. he took off his coat and worked with might and main for the election of the entire Republican ticket at the General Election. This marked him to be a man whose love of party was gieater than his love of self, and caused many of his opponents to realize his real worth. Friends of the other candidates are practically unanimous in conceding the Republican nomination for Surrogate to Mr. Carroll, and although loath to confess it, admit that he is the best man for the office. Mark Lake is making a strong campaign, and wi.h the satisfactory explanation of the malicious falsehoods circulated by his political opponents. Mr. Lake has secured the loyal support of many who opposed him last year. He is seeking the support of the Republican voters solely on his previous record in the Assembly, which was marked by his efficiency and loyalty to his constituency. The clean, straightforward methods he is using in his present campaign are in marked contrast to the campaign of villification and lies of his opponents. Present indications are that Paul Carroll and Mark loike will go through on September 25th with the biggest majority ever polled by Republican candidates at a Primary Election in this County.

BOND ISSUE SLOW. The first issue of liberty Bonds will probably not natch the hands of those who bought them much before the second issue is offered. It now seems certain that the Bureau of Engraving and l*rinting at Washington will not be able to get the bonds off its presses in anything like the time at first estimated; and the bank-note companies of the country have been called upon for bids tm work to assist the Bureau. The prices named by the companies competiag for the work range from fourteen to twenty cents per bond. How this compares with the cost of the work turned out by the government, we do not know; nor is that a matter of great consequence. l»ut it is of some value, as (tearing upon the efficiency of the administration, to know that Mr. McAd<<o lacked the foresight to plan for these bonds in season to have the mechanical w».rk upon them done in ample time so that one issue ofboods might at least be in the hands of its purchasers before another was planned for and offered.
