MAC KISS1C SHOULD BE RE-ELECTED. In the Lower Township District, which comprises Lower Township, West Cape May, South Cape May. Cape May Point and Wildwood Crest, J. P. MacKissic is a candidate for re-election to the County Board of Freeholders. He is op- ' posed by the present State Committeeman, Charles Bohm. who is backed by the clique who have been try in* for the past few years tc get control of the County, and who were back of the SmaU Board of Freeholders movement of last year. Bohm is part and parcel of this outfit, popularly termed the “Rigor" faction. The very efficient work that Mr. MacKissic has done on the Board of Freeholders in the past three years surely entitles him to re-elec-tion, while the very fact that his opponent is lined up as he is, should be sufficient to defeat him. * The strong fight that MacKissic made for the building of the Bay Shore Road, when he was practically alone, should not be forgotten by the voters of his district MacKissic is always in his seat and on the job. and his defeat this year would be a loss, indeed, to Ixiwer Township, her Boroughs and the entire County. Three members of the Board o. Freeholders, who we shall not mane—now—are bitterly opposing Mr. MacKissic** efforts to be returned. T^'s would indicate, if anything, that MacKissic is one member of the Board that will .-t take orders, but thinks for himself. Another fact that makes this krai Freeholder contest of county-wide interest, is that Mr. MacKissic lias always been a supporter of Bohm. and less than three months ag*\ Mr. Bohm promised Mr. MacKissic his undivided support. Associating Mr. Bohm with the crowd with wDom he is affiliated would lead one to believe that the fact that there is a County Collector and a Solicitor to be api»>inted by the Board next year has something to do with his change of heart Everyone has heard it said that Mr. Rigor aspires to be County Collector and Ernesl Lloyu. his right hand bower, to be County Solicitor. The voters of Lower Township have once again an opportunity to repudiate the dictation of this facdon. They should make their answer even more decisive than they did a few weeks ago at the Wildwood ('rest municipal election.
ened next Summer the present road wC! be
wholly inadequate.
The State law, upon which State appropriations are based, calls for all new roads to be thirty-three feet wide, at least On the Strathmere Road, State aid was not received, And jt was for this reason, perhaps, and in the interests of economizing on a road that was an experiment at its best that the Freeholders built it only twenty feet wide. The experimental stage has passed, however, and the need and value of this road has been proven. Steps should, therefore, be tafcen at once to widen it to at least 33 feet or even forty feet There have been at least three auto accidents on this road this year, two of which were caused by the fact that the r »ad is so narrow that it is impossible to turn around on it With the present travel this is bad enough. With the increased travel upon the opening of the Inlet Bridge, the situation will be positively serious, unless the road is widened.
ARE WE GROWING? There is much food for thought in the bulle.tin issued by the Atlantic County Normal School Commission, showing a comparison of the percentum increase in ratable* and population of the various South Jersey Counties. Cape MkV County shows an increase in valuation of 411.4 per cent, in seventeen years, the greatest increase of any of the Counties except Atlantic, where the increase has been 575L2%. Against Cape May County's increase of 411.4 per cent, Salem County has grown ouiy 37.3 per cent, while Ocean County’s increase is 209.9 per cent and Camden County’s increase 181.8 per cent. The actual increase in dollars^was $29,865,646.00 ir. our County. The population figures are also interesting. Cape May County’s increase in population during the past twenty-five years was 13,139, or 116 per cent over 1890. Salem County has grown 20 per cent. Ocean County 44 per cent and Camden County 86 per cent The greatest increase, outside of Camden County, was in Gloucester County, where the growth was 52 per cent, or 64 per cent less than Cape May County. Are we growing? Unless figures lie, we should say. yes!
Congratulation*! The Times is in receipt of a copy of the 26-page Booster Issue of the Wildwood Sun. and congratulates the publishers on their splendid achievement The issue is wdl printed, nicely illustrated, and reflects great credit on the part of those who made it possible. It is the first issue of the kind ever produced by a Wildwood newspaper.
The farmers of America have not merely done their “bit," they have done their “best" And the same thing can be said of a lot of others. It is true of the newspaper publishers, the bankers. brokers, insurance men and others who made the liberty loan a success. There have been and there are "slackers/’ but they are a small minority.
"A good many persons." we read in Mr. Brian’s paper. The Commoner, “seem to have the idea that they are doing their full duty as patriotic citizens by devoting their time to telling other people what their duties aro.” We wonder if a mirror is part of the furniture in Mr. Bryan’* editorial sanctum.
Mr. Wilson's refusal to stand for a committee | which shat] audit the expenditures of the war indicates that this war of his is not alone to be carried on to make the world safe for democracy. but also to make the war safe fop-the Democracy.
WIDEN THE STRATHMERE ROAD. Now that work is getting well under way on the Corson’s Inlet Bridge, the matter of widening the road from Sea Isle City to Strathmere should be taken up without delay by the Board of Freeholders. This road was built twenty i feet wide, and cannot accommodate the present travel. When the Corson’s inlet Bridge is op-
