•ART SHEA WRITES FROM CAMP HANCOCK.

Food Good and Everybody Comfortable, With Plenty of Work for All. Bart Shea, son of Mr. and Mr*. Wm. Shea, oi Philadelphia, well known Sea isle City cottager*, who D a member of the Mounted Cavalry, in training at Cam;- Hancock, write# as follows to hla father, nnder date of September

22 rd:

Dear Father: Walk we arc finally settled in camp, after our long ride. We were one day and a half on the train, or to be exact, forty hours In all. and did not arrive In Augusta until 2 o’rlock A. M. on Thursday. We would, no doubt, have made better time, only for tbe fact that we made several e-ops to water and feed tbe horse* We wee*, very comfortably quartered, tbe whcle troop train being made up of tourist* car*, with several large baggage cars for cooking. We received quite an oration all along the route, especially at a small town In South Carolina, called Denmark. where we made a atop. Upon our arrival at tbe Augusta freight yard# Thursday morning we were all asleep In our bunks and to our nurprlae received orders to detrain at once. We started unloading tbe horw ea and equipment, walking tbe horse* to the ramp and hauling other equipment In large army motor .truck*, a distance of about three mile*. To cur surprise the weather was very cold; we worked right on through the next day and believe me tbe day was boiling hot from one extn-ne to the other. By six o'clock Friday we had all our tenia up and thing* In fairly good shape. Each camp here 1* aeparcte Infantry, Artillery. Engineer*. Slraal Corps. Military Police, etc- all having their own camp*, each camp being about one-half mile apart. Tbe cavalry camp Is located on a hill. *-irrounded by a beautiful valley, our horse* being stationed there on picket line*. Each troop has a troop street, tents running parallel with open air kl-cb-ca and mess ball facing ol a road In front. Tbe scenery and surrounding country here 1* beautiful, tbe whole camp covering about eleven square miles, and about alx. miles from Augusta, the only meant of transportation being Jitneys that charge fifiy cents both waya, or walk tr-o mile* to th» trolley. We have every convenience, each troop having ten shower oaths, plenty of toilet# and watwr. and as a whole, we all vote It a very good camp, never witnessed such pretty scenery AS- —- a— Lcr.. 'nr —»!l— Away off to tbe r-xht of us can be seen tbe canvas ctiy of the Tenth Infantry of Pittsburgh. 1 will venture to say thst Camp Hancock is one of the busiest places In the country, large armymotor truck*, mounted orderlies, soldier* passing to and fro. everything hustle and bustle We started on our dally grind last Monday and while It came hard to us tbe first week, we are gradually getting accustomed to It. Mounted drill seven hours a day D not as nice as one would Imagine it to be Troop E left last week for the remount s-atlon. this being located about ten miles from tbe camp There is a large coral there where there are stationed about five thousand horse* There Is a report going the round* that we are to leave next week to Join them, and If so It will be only for a few week* 1 see by tbe "Evening Bulletin that we are to be changed In'o Infantry, and It caused a lot of amusement here, for our schedule for sixteen weeks calls for nothing but mounted cavalry drill end tactics We have in our regiment a mounted - ity band cosaposvd of fifty-set - piece*. A great and very Impreasite sight is the guard mount, which '* belu every evening at five-ten: thl* 1« * »*- view and Inspection of ali the kumd* for that night and fallowing day. They u£d around the field by the Major and band and U witnessed by quite a number of people from Augusta and the small surrounding town*. The first few day- our food was rather Inferior, but is gradually Improving Today. Sunday, we enjoyed a menu ol roast beef, mashed potatoes, pea«. cow's milk and ice cream, with plenty for all We are all pretty well hardened and in the b*-t of physical condition L personally, aever fell better in my life We so througl. v-Tj strenuous exercise lour time:., da) period* of fifteen minutes each, j _ sysleiL which develop- all -olnU of the bod» A few days more and our tents will be all equipped with elecMc light*, which will 00-away with the] caatB lantern We live In the larae army tent, which •eoanmodat*. six -*s very r*anfortabl>. each man, (Cantlaued naea 4) THINGS YOU SHOULD REMEMBER City Commisaioners meet every | Wednesday afternoon. The hearing waa to determine whether or aot the’County should '*vover Landis Avenue, and improve and maintain it at County expense, it being a link of the All Resort Boulevard, that will eventually extend from Ocean City through the resorts to Cape May City. Practically the entire Board attended the meeting. Speaking for the Ciiy Commlaaloners. City Engineer Collison favored the Landis Avenue proposition, stating (hat il would cost iwo-thlrda lesa to put into condition ihsn Central Avenue. To combat this, Mr. ClouUng stated that the City Commissioners favored the Ci.unty taking over Landis Avenue because they (the Commissioners) could not raise enough money taxes to improve the street, which was In bad condition to Townsend's Inlet Mr. Chester raised the point that Landis Avenue would cot bo wide enough, as the trolley road took up 17 feet of the street.
