WHY!
Mathew JeEeraon. Ei Prosecntor of Cape May County. Is aervlns a urn of from one and m-half years to three years to the State Prison at Trenton, foe violation of his public trust as a County official. Without dlscnsslnx the menu of the Jefferson case, the details of which are still fresh In the minds of most of the realdenU of the County, one can not help but stop a bit now and then and wonder why Jefferson u behind the bars, and detective Cbeeseman, who wra indicted at the same time, under the same charges, is still enjoying his liberty, and is apparently to conttnne so Indefinitely. Why. for instance, waa not Cheese man brought to trial at the same time as Jefferson T Why, now that Jefferson has been proven guilty by the courts, ones not the County Judicial machinery start sot ion against his co-partner in crime? Why draw a line between Jefferson and Cbeeseman: send one to Jail, and allow the other to go scot free? We do not wish to see anyone deprived of his liberty, or be forced to beer the stigma of criminality. But we oo believe In fair play, and cannot reconcile ourselves to gross discrimination. whether actual, or only apparent Wc have followed up tills case closely. and as soon as Jefferson was convicted. our first question of the then acting Prosecutor. James Russell Carrow. war when the ClieeMman case would be moved. The reply was that Jefferson had appealed his case, and nine* the Cbeeamian case was identical. nothing would hr done until the Supreme Court had handed down a derision The decision came; nine* then two court ti-rrus have come and gone: the Chxav'snan case was never touched. Why* Is It because Jefferson had personal and political foe* in the County who wanted him removed from «JBer for personal reasons: and Cberwmnn, not long of this County, was merely brought Into the case as a blind? Or is It because chances have been wrought in the office of the County Prosecutor, and previous indictments have been laid aside and are to be forgotten? We hope the latter to true; but If It la. it doea not make things any better, and does not bring to Justin- one whom the Grand Inquest believed euAciently Involved In a criminal action, white an ec ploy re of the County, to return five Indictments

It would be- hard for our friends who visit us for a few months in ibe summer. to realite that cold weather actually does Lit the shore once in awhile and so hard that it makes the ocean a mass of Ice for as far as the eye can reach. Yet such was the case during this week's cold snap. Ice formed on the surface of tha water for a mite out and the slothful, me ridden breakers served to stow it up along the beath until the shore assumed a look like that of pictures w* have eret, of Pea ry'a expedition lo the North Pole. The Board of FreeholJera are to be commended upon their program of economy. In adopting a budget Thursday's meeting which la i JS.000 under that of last year. With the steadily mounting taxes of every nature, from a postage stamp to railroad ticket, any effort by the County scions to keep the budget down to avert a further Increase in the County tax rate for next year will be appreciated.
