J ’—The Local Option law has been passed, written upon the Statute books of the State, and is now operative. In all fairness to the hotel-keepers of the County, those mumcjpahties in which the W. C. T. U. and local option lorces are active, should hold their special elecUon NOW—at once. Most of the liquor licenses in the County expire within the next sixty ^iays, and it would be manifestly unfair to allow the holders of these licenses to obtain renewals at the April term of Court, at a cost of «20o to $400, only to have them revoked a month or two later, U the local option election should carryThe first municipality in the State to use the new law is Tuckerton. in Ocean County, where at the' instance of the Methodist Church, a special election will soon be held. Other municipalities of the State, and especially Cape May County, should follow Tuckerton’s lead as quickly as possible. It will be best to get it out of our system, and have it oyer with before the summer season, at any rate. An election daring the Spring or Summer months at the shore is very undesirable.

WHAT ABOUT THE INLET BRIDGE? . War conditions and weather conditions have conspired to make the completion of the Corson’s Inlet bridge, from Ocean City to Strathmore, an exceedingly difficult task. Material is almost impossible to obtain at any price, due to freight embargoes; the steel needed for the draw must go to help make ships; and ice has partly undone the work already completed. In spite of theee set-backs, however, the CORSON’S INLET BRIDGE MUST BE ‘COMPLETED for use this summer—at ANY COST. It is the roost needed improvement in the County, and the summer of 1918 MUST NOT PASS without the bridges being in use. How this can be done is a matter for wiser heads than ours. This much, however, is obvious: If the steel draw cannot be obtained, SUBSTITUTE ANOTHER style and if the other specified material cannot be procured, such as piling and decking, SUBSTITUTE ANOTHER KIND that CAN be had. Get the bridge done and open for travel. That’s the thing to aim at Messrs. Powell and Champion! That’s the thing to work for, Messrs. Board of Freeholders! And summer is coming—fost.

THEY DO PROTEST TOO MUCH. If the people of the country have been nourishing any feeling of sympathy for Secretary of \Var Baker because the Senate Military Affairs Committee did not call a joint session of the two Houses of Congress to hear his defense, »he waste of sympathy may as well cease There need be no doubt that the Baker defense will reach a hundred times as many readtrs as will the accur-alions of incompetence made against him. After the country has seen the high slate of efficiency of the distribution service of the Committee o« Public Information and has also observed the manner in which hundreds of thousands, and probably millions of the MeAdoo speeches have been circulated by government employees and others, there is not likely to be any lack of circulation of the Baker defense. The people will have the wool pulled over their eyes and they will pay for the wool and the pulling. After pitting $1800 a year government employees at clerical work in the dwtribution of the McAdoo speeches, there is no probability that there will be any lack of energy and pep in the distribution of the Raker speech. This adminietnition may not be in favor of some kinds of publicity, but the presentation of its defense is not one of the kinds

under taboo.

It is gratifying indeed that a County like Cape May, so overwhelmingly outnumbered in the State Legislature by mem here from the northern iiortiun of the Slate, rhoald make such a splendid allowing, as it has this year, in both branches of the Legislature. Both Senator Stevens and Assemblyman Lake have been active in *xthail T their constituency, and have been instrumental in the eaaetment of some especially constructive legislation. A complete list of the measures introduced by them appears else-
