HE WILL UPHOLD THE FLAG. In appointing David Baird to dll part of the unexpired term in the United States Senate of the late William Hughes, Governor Edge has not acted without carefully weighing the pros and cons
of the case.
A Republican stalwart, Mr. Baird has made foes as well as friends, but the great fesue in such a time as this is his attitude toward the war, and there is no question that he stands firmly for carrying out the i’resideni.’s policies to the end. . Since the term will be bnet uiat Mr. Baird is to sen e as Senator, there is hardly ground lor any .strenuous opposition to him because of his being iu ins seventy-dun tn year, ms i acuities are keen, his health sutnciem u> warrant me presumption Uiat ne will not give way under the burdens oi las new oince, and as to. his inclinations to approve ol the tacucs oi the foes oi tne administration, his fighting blood, is still too warm to permit of the idea
taking root.
Mr. Baird will not make an unsatisfactory successor to Senator Hughes. Let him continue consistent m nis strengthening oi President Wilson’s hands and the Republican party will nave no complaint to make against the appointment. Governor Edge, in his caution to Mr. Baird that Uie people ol this State demand in all things pertaining to war, absolute support of the President, serves admirably to put boin the Execuuvs and Mr. Baird betore the pub' 1 '* with their iutenuona cleariy denned, lor the reply oi Camden political veteran was a ringing notification to the people of his loyalty on war issues. Both men, therefore, have effectually silenced criticism at the start upon what might have been an aggravating point had it re-
mained unanswered.
If Mr. Baird keeps his word, as he will, he has litiJe to fear from any other adverse comment. We are at war and the man who will see that our plans are not betrayed is the man most acceptable. All other considerations can well be shelved. To uphold the flag is the supreme political commandment.—Atlantic City

COUNTY.
The decision of the Racing Aaaocia Uon of South Jeraey Yacht Clube to do away with expensive prises for racing this season and to apply the money tbm saved to Red Cross purposes has attracted the attention of motorboa: racing authorities far and wide. Th - intention to use such funds for thi creation of a Red Cross donation is laudable and praiseworthy, it is the selling of an opportunty to torn sports to good account, and. while- there la a feeling that Indulgence In racing contest* is in conflict with patriotism, or th< feeling of helping in the

WOULD EXEMPT FARM LABOR.
Congressman Edward E. Denison, of Illinois, holds to the view that young men whose services are necessary to cultivate the crops are, in no sense of the word, slackers in claiming exemption when drafted into the military service. Mr. Denison is a man who is thoroughly alive to the critical labor situation on our farms. “I think it is the duty of men”, says he, “to claim exemption when drafted if their services are necessary on the farm.” Mr. Denison deplores the fact that the Provost Marsha! General’s office was not more liberal in granting industrial exemptions in conscr-pUng the first increment of the National Army, and is glad to see an improvement in that regard as applieu to the next draft But he insists that more attention should be paid to the needs of the agricultural sections of the country than is evident at the present time.
LINCOLN'S WAR SECRETARY.
In an address at the Grand Army annual banquet in Washttgton recenty. Secretory of War Baker told his hearers that as be sal at his desk in his office, he laced a statue of Edwin M
ol '\ar by Abraham Lincoln. Mr
Baker told of the reflections to which the view of this statue gave me as he gared upon it from Jus office chair. Among thosTi^ flections, however, there was no mention of the fact that Stanton was an eminent Democrat, and was made Secretory of War by a
