Swift & Company Publicity At a recent hearing of the Federal Trade Commission there was introduced correspondence taken from the private files cf Swift & Company, which showed that the Company had been considering for some time an educational advertising campaign. The need for this publicity has been apparent to us for several years. The gross misrepresentation to which we have recently been subjected has convinced us that we should no longer delay in putting before the public the basic facts of our business, relying on the fair-mindedness of the American people. The feeling against the American packer is based largely on the belief that the income and well-being of the producer and consumer are adversely afiected by the packers' operations, resulting in unreasonably large profits. Swift A Company’s net profit is reasonable, and represents an insignificant factor in the cost of living. For the fiscal year 1917 the total sales and net profit of Swift & Company were as follows: $875,000,000. Profit* _ $34,650,000. ■ This is equivalent to a $3,465. piofit on a business of $87,500. If Swift 4c Company bad made no profit at all, the cattle raiaer would have received only one-eighth of a cent per pound more for hia cattle, or the consumer would have saved only one-quarter of a cant per pound on dreaaed beef. Are You Reaaing?_ The Biggest Newspaper Serial Feature Since the Beginning of the War! “Over the Top” By SERGEANT ARTHUR GUY EMPEY. The TIMES has been fortunate enough to secure the serial rights to this great story, the jnost talked-of of the hour. For a year and a half, until he fell wounded in No Man’s Land, this American soldier saw more actual fighting and real warfare than any war correspondent who has written about the war. His experiences are grim, but they are thrilling and lightened by a touch of humor as original as the Soldiers Three. And they are true. •‘Over the Top” is the first story by one of the Amei «can soldiers who went to France, has been a real combatant and ha.< seen long service in the trenches. Sergeant Empty tells what it actually means and feels like: • - ** to lie wounded seven times; . , - * to live for a year and a half with mud and rats and shells; to be covered with "cooties” and never get rid of them ; to co over the top in a charge; . to jirasp for your gas helmet when a second s delay means death; to capture a Prussian; to get tangled up in barb-wire with that machine gun working a few yards away; , to lie for thirty-six hours wounded and unconscious in J\o Man’s Land.” Then besides the dramatic momenta, one wants in these days of our own getting ready, to know about the actual work itself- ’’Over the Top” tells how to make and throw bombs; dig and consolidate trenches; use barb-wire; cut the enemy’s barb-wire at night so as not to betray vour presence: work machine guns: bring up ration*.; charge; drain trenches; make maps; execute spies; go on litening post; or attend t all parts of the day’s work as they do it now in France. And then in relief there are true accounts of the fun and comradeship of the trenches, for there are compensation* for all the hardships. Ktnpey is now on the lecture platform and is thrilling audiences all over the country. His story and hi* talks have inspired more men, perhaps, to enter the light for humanity than the work of any single individuaL Aow Running—Page 3 Every American father and mother, daughter and son will .ead the paper in which thi* American boy tell* how be did hia bit “Somawhera 1b FrtaeW . _j

Beyond a certain point an OWNER cannot regulate the CONTRACTOR he employs. You can cage a leopard, but you cannot change his spots or his point of view.
