BRAIN AS WELL AS BRAWN.

Now Mr. Schwab says he was misquoted. He never predicted a reign of Bolshevikism in this country, as has been said. What he said was that he believe! this country would in the future be ruled by “the people who work,” meaning by that the people who work with their hands, with tools and with their brains. We have always supposed that to be the case in the United States, anyway. It has been only within the past few years that a school of opinion has been made strong which believes that tHb only real worker is the one who works with his hands and that no other class is entitled to any consideration at all. That is a vicious theory. of course. The workers who work with their hands may be the most numerous among the working classes, and if they are all united in any cause that cause is bound to triumph through the might of majorities which still prevails in this country. But the fact is that some of the hardest workers and some of the most essential workers are those whose hands have never borne a callous. The Republican party when it was in power never exalted

one class of workers at the expense of another.

. There is no foundation for the alleged violations of law attributed to our Company by agents of the Federal Trade Commission and I want to say emphatically that Swift & Company is not a party to any conspiracy to defraud the Govemro^nt. Nor has Swift & Company been guilty of improperly storing foods or of making false entries or reports. Conferences of packers, where prices have been discussed, have been held at the urgent request and in the presence of representatives of either the Food Administration or the Council of National Lie tense. And yet the packers have been accused of committing a felony by acting in collusion on Government Hiffo | We have done our beat, with other pactes, large and small, to comply with Redirections or the United Slates Food Administration in all particulars, including the furnishing of food supplies for the U. S. Army and Navy and the Allies, now bemg handled through the Food Administration. We will continue to do our utmosLunoer Government direction, to increase our pratoctxm and assist the Food Administrauon. We consider that the opportunity to.co-operate whole-heartedly and tooS mllest powers with this branch of the Government is our plain and most pressing duty. . P*® Tr » de Commission Attorney has. by false inference and misplaced empha•u, given to disconnected portions of the “"despondence taken from our private Hra and read into the Recrrd, a false and smEter meaning willi the plain purpose of creating antagonistic pobik opinion! The service, of the packer, of rh. United States arc most urgently needed the! ““ddini-y that we should at Umnmc have to spend our efforts in against unfounded, unproved, and unlair assertions such m are being daily made public.
