for a double crop during the growing season. The seashore markets, close by, offer a field for the retail sale of all that is grown. at good prices. Yet despite these advantages. Cape May County’s farms have not been, until very recent years, as well-kept and as well-paying as the farms in other counties close by, where the natural benefits are not nearly so great. One of the factors contributing largely to the present-day prosperity of the County farmer is the active work being done by the office of the County Farm Demonstrator, which is maintained at public expense, solely to better conditions on the farm and in the rural sections of the County. The Demonstrator is versed in the most modern methods of “doing things" and travels about the county giving practical demonstrations of up-to-date farm prac-
tices.
There are many farmers, no doubt, who are as well versed in what Ls modem as is the Farm Demonstrator, but the difficulty is that they cash in on this knowledge themselves, anti do not pass it along where it will help their less fortunate brothers. The establishment of the Farm Demonstration office in Cape May County was as wise a move on the part of the Board of Freeholders us has been made in a long time, and both their enterprise, and the good work of the present incumbent. Professor Stackhouse, is to be commended. The results are evi-

FOR SHRINKAGE. Congressman Richard N. Elliott, of Indiana, is receiving letters from his State commending him on the introduction of his bill allowing farmers two cents per bushel ^er month for storing wheat. Mr. Elliott is particularly plea.-ed with a communication he has received fi-om the Governor of Indiana. It is evident to the Congressman that unless some such action as he has proposed is . taken many farmers will be unjustly discriminated against The man who threshes early will be able to sell his crop and secure transporUitmn for it. but those who are compelled to thresh at a later date will have to put their wheat in storage until transportation can be secured, and then sell it at no higher price than the first man. They will lose the shrinkage in the storehouse, for which they were not at all responsible, and which should be reimbursed to them.

THE CENSUS GRAB. While the Census bill was undt-r discussion in the House, Representative John G. Cooper, of Ohio, »• ught the adoption of an amendment that would have taken from the Democrats some, at least, of the enormous amount t,f patronage they will exercise when that measure is put into effect. As it now reads all census aupen isors are to be appointed by the Sercetary of Commerce upon recommendation of the Director of the Census. Of course that means that practically all will be Democrats. Mr. Cooper would have given*the Congressmen a voice in making recommendations for apjs mtmeni. in their own districts. Had his views Prevailed Republican districts would have stood-a chance of having their inhabit**)'-* recorded by Republican supervisors. But Mr. Cooper’s amendment met w ith disfavor from the party in control, and was defeated.

WITH A STIC K IN' IT. A Presidential commission to inquire into the subject of narcotic and.habit-forming drugs is proposed in a resolution bearing the authorship «.f Senator Joseph S. Krelinghuyaen, of New Jersey. The Senator has been aroused by the greatly increased sales of “soft drinks" at fountains throughout the country and in the vicinity of our military camps. Many of those drinks he dedans are charged with caffeine, which contributes materially to the formation of the drug habit among the young people of the country. To get at the real facts Mr. 1 telinghuysen would authorize the President to appoint three citizens to investigate the causes which lead to the use of drugs, the extent of such use. and other fc tors bearing upon the matter. For the expenses of the commission $50,000 in appropriated.

The “Busy Hours” of the Telephone
T^HE patt month* have been busy one* in A. telephone service—and busier months arc in store. The volume of telephone calling ha* Increased in an unparalleled way. reflecting the great industrial activities of the time*.
Studies of the hourly volume* of telephone railing, made at our central office »witphboards. show that the “busy hours” arc from 9 to 11 In the morning and from 2 to 4 in the afternoon If wc may flatten the “traffic peaks" that characterue these busy hours, wc may provide better service and care for more calls as the requirements increase.
We ask this co-operation on the part of all users of our acrvice: that they disrrtbutc their telephone calls throughout the day, that they make only the ncceuao telephone calls during the busy hours; that they make tiu.se calls that must be made as brief as possible War nmc conditions make this requev necessary; wc fed that wc may count on your help.
