EXPRESS COMPANY EFFICIENCY.
The issue of the Cape May County Times, and the Seven Mile Beach Reporter, both of which are published by the Times Company were held up last week due entirely to the splendid (?) and efficient service rendered by the Express company., which delayed a shipment of type from Pleasantville. taking six days to bring a
package twenty miles!
Since the shortage of labor became so acute, and printers were almost impossible to hire at any price, the bulk of the composition for our publications was sent out to be set by machine. Only the late copy was set in the office. Linotype shipments arc made regularly every Thursday afternoon, and should reach us on Fri-
*day morning.
They did, regularly, until the past three weeks. The first week, the package was twelve hours bite; the second week forty-eight hours late; and last week’s package was five days late! Of course, other arrangements have now been made for handling our composition, and thi Times and Reporter will hereafter be out on sebt-Jale time. We are making this explanation to let our readers know the real reason for our dela; last week, and to give voice to the complaint that has been almost universal in this section for the past month, of the rank and most inefficient sendee given by the Express Com-
pany.
With due allowance for ihe extraordinary conditions now obtaining. due to the shortage of labor and the heavy shipping, it does seem that some measures could be taken to safeguard against the almost unbelievably bad service now given. When our type did not arrive on schedule time, ve profited by past experience, and simply waited. But by Monday morning of this week, the “watchful waiting” became irksome and nerveracking, and we called up the Superintendent’s office in Camden,
explaining the circumstances.
Our painfully detailed explanation brought forth the following intelligent ami enlightening response; “You’ll have to wait. When the package reaches Sea Isle City it will be delivered to you." That! after a half hour's time, and two dollars in toll charges! We then got our Philadelphia office on the w ire, and asked them to .vend a man personally to the Express Company headquarters. After tv i . .. i>: i.. .ill adci-ed us that the station platform in Camden was piled ten feet hirh with express matter, some of which hail • ■ en there for two weeks or more! And that nothin;
could U done t
ly waiting.
Query ..f a local express agent elicited the information that j
there is no method of tracing a shipment of express. Sending Sl “* goods, perishable, or otherwise, by express, therefore, is simply'..,.
trusting to the that it arrives at its destination. Since our own litii*- -lifficulty. we made a quiet little investiga- i tion, and found, to • u* everlasting astonishment, that many, trunks -hipta-ii i<; in.mer residents from Sea Isle City to Philadelphia three weeks ago. have not been delivered yet! That shipments of fruit- cigars, groceries and the like, were robbed on the way so that only a small portion of what was originally shipped reached their destination! That express company employees were uncivil and vurt. ia. king in even the ordinal?’ niceties to
which the public has bee i arru-tomed.
What’s the reason? ! • it government control? Or is it a ■ knowledge on the part of the express company employees that their services are so badly needed that no matter what they do)
will get by?
Is there no central authority to which complaints can be referred with any degree of certainty that they will get attention? , Something, sftipewhere along the express company line, has! .-lipped a cog. What i> it?

The Seashore Gas Company this year has enjoyed splendid patronage. The confidence which the people of Sea Isle City have displayed in the management has l»een most encouraging, and even - effort was made by us to cany out the obligation of a public utility corporation to its consumers. The unlooked-for demand for gas this year, however, so severely taxed the capacity of our plant that on three occasions service was discontinued. at times when it was moijt inconvenient to O’ consumers. • The help situation was critical; fuel had to obtain; these we combatted with successfully, but the break in our boiler, and other accidents, were unavoidable. We regret very sincerely that we have been compelled to put our users to the inconvenience of being without gas at different intervals, especially at this season, and will arrange at once to lie adequately prepared for any i nit-rgenry that might arise in the future.

Beyond a certain point an OWNER cannot regulate the CONTRACTOR he employs. You can cage a leopard, but you cannot change his spots or his point of view.
