The climax of the gas situation in Sea lale City was reached on Monday when Vice-Chancellor Learning granted the application of M'chael A. Maloney. who, as the Vice-Chancellor put iL "has a hot potato and want* to drop for a receiver for the Seaahore
as Company.
Mr. Wile, attorney for Mr. Maloney chief stockholder of the defunct company, stated that the oempany owed the City 11290 for taxes, and owed Mr. -laloney personally, over *4000; that the caafa asests were *86.39; that there wa* no coal to operate the plant, and no money with which to buy any. The Plant must b» ahnt down, he said, and that either the City must bny It at Junk price, or it must he Junked by
the receiver.
Solicitor Cole, and Mayor Fitch, representing the City of Sea Isle City, offered no opposition to the receivership, but Mr. Cole stated that the shutting down of the plant would be a different mhtter. He thought, perbonally, th.» the plant could be run at a profit If the large overhead charges were dona
away with.
Vice-Chancellor Leamir~ aaw no solution, and invited suggr <Uona as to who should be receiver. Mr. DeBow wi.s named, upon the req . eat of Solicitor Cole. Arrangements were effected whereby the monies due the gas company from the City for street lighting. amounting to about *200, would be used by the receiver to temporarily operate the plant. Other money la due
from private consunv'rs.
On the face of it there appears to be only one possible way for the City to retain lu gas plant, and that is for either the City itself to buy It, or some other public utility company to take it over, when it could he profitably operated. At Monday's hearing it was stated by Mr. Wile that the plant would now bring not over *4000, while only a year ago It sold for *8000 at forced sale, and has vtnee been Improved. The plant orlgtahlly cost
nearly *30.000.
Mayor Pitch, ta an Interview, stated that his belief was that t e permanent closing up of the gas rl mt would be the most serious handU p to the resort's development aud voiced the opinion that a satisfactory solution
would be found.
The gas proposition In Sea Isle City from iu inception has b« -n one series of sad and Inglorious nr takes, at the expense of the private cc- sumer* who have more actual cash i vested ta gaa equipment and private .pe lines than was ever Invested In it plant itself.
