What waa otherwise a peaceful meeting of the Board of Freeholders at Cape May Court House on Tuesday, developed Into a pitched battle when the matter of the purchase of two additional “Tlffen" motor trucks was
brought up.
Last year the Automobile Committee of the Board waa empowered to buy two two and one-half ton motor trucks, and two trucks of the "Tlffen” type were bought, at a cost of $4114 each. Tbe trucks have given good service, and it was thought 'hat inasmuch as the trucks were capable of hauling four times as much as teams, two additional trucks would be a good
tn vestment
Accordingly two additional "Tlffen" uc "ere specified, and bids invited, b: ere opened on Tuesday. Tbe Uy ider. of course, waa Loder A Sharp, of Philadelphia, who have the exclusive agency for this truck ‘m Cape May County, and from whom the other two trucks were purchased. Freeholder Camp, of Middle Townahlp, started the barrag- by stating that he didn’t think that the price ot Loder A Sharp was what It should be, and that he had tried personally to get a price from them ard couldn’t. He thought, he said, that a truck equally as good as the "Tlffen” could be bought for $3500. To this Freeholder DeBow, of Sea Isle City, replied that he had watched tbe workings of tbe Tlffen* and that they could easily carry a great overload. and were doing excellent service. and that before tbe first two were bought his committee had carefully Investigated various trucks, and concluded that st the price the Tlffen was the best bargain. Attorney Bonnell. of Cape May Court House, representing several County truck dealers, then was given tbe floor, and staled that he had bids from dealers In other Counties on the celf-same “Tlffen" that Loder A Sharp wanted $4114 for at a price of $3980, and that he could strove what be said.

Mr. Haines, of Cape May, agent fo* a competing truck, then got up and told all be knew and some more, the result of which waa a lively tilt between him and Freeholder Young, of Wildwood, also a member of the auto committee. Mr. Haines said that the county paid $1300 more for the first two trucks than the Ust price, and intimated that Mr. Young knew where the $1300 had gone. To this Mr. Young replied that he had never been offered a cent of rebate either personally or for the county from the "Tiffen” people. but that the car which Mr. Haines and aome other of the dealers In the room were, selling bad offered him a rake-off of ten pet cenL Mr. Young i* a men of know-n integrity, and no one in the crowded Freeholder room thought that he told other than the truth, as developed In the general discussion that followed the meeting. Mr. Lode: Uu-n took tbe doer, and to refute what had been charged of graft stated that be had sold a truck to Contractor Powell, of Ocean City, only two days before for $250 more than he asked the county In the bid submitted Tuesday Attorney Bonnell ha* certiorari paper* ready to serve If the trucks were ordered from 1-odcr and Sharp, but was saved serving them by a morion that prevailed to table the whole matter The Freeholders apparently were of the mind that the trucks had better be dropped as long as there was a hint of Irregularity.
