An Excartionleu Fourth Another of those glaring blunders of the Railroad administration, with reference to seashore service, came to light on Wednesday morning, when it was announced that there would be no excur sions to shore points over the Fourth of July. # Thus is the man in moderate circumstances, who depends upon the excursions for a day’s vacation to the shore tn be deprived of his Fourth of July, or week-end vacation, while his more prosperous brother pays the high fare rates, or rolls leisurely to the shore points in his motor car. This is obviously a rank, gross and rotten discrimination, and just at a time when the thought of every normal human is turning shore-ward. It has appeared, and does appear, all along, that the policy of the Railroad Administratipn is make a shore vacation as expensive and difficult as possible for the man who cannot afford to spend a week, month or season at one of the beaches. In the matter of commutation rates, the wealthy shore patron who has his family comfortably located in a #500 or a $1000 cottage for the season, can ride back and from his Philadelphia business for a matter of sixty odd cents, while the poor chap, who comes down for the weekend, or for a day, must pay nearly five dollars for the same service, riding the same distance and in the same cars as the sixty cent,trav-

eler.

The one can afford to rent a cottage and have his family at the shore for the season, the other cannot, and because of this, he must pay and pay dearly, for his short jaunt which perhaps means his only vacation after a hard grind in the shop, shipyard and factory. And now, the one possibility for his holiday over the Fourth is gone. No excursions, if you please. If yci want a day at the shore, "cough up your five dollars’’ is in effect, w !>at the Railroad (mis) management tells him. Yet, the Railroad Adminislialiou can, and are sending special trains to accomodate rich sportsmen who wish to witness a brutal prize fight, which is neither a legitimate procecdure noi a patriotic celebration. Socialism, auaichisnt and bolshevism, those rapidly spreading open-sores of society, are bor. in discontent Take away a man’s well earned vacation trip, a»«d discontent is bred. From this it would appear quite obvious that some one man, or some body of men, at the railroad's beads are wittingly or otherwise, using their offices to give life to that very disuatisfactiou that we are urged to prevent. Heaven speed the day for the return to private control of the railroads!

for • gloriout celebration ou the Fourth o( July, and an intonating program bat been arranged by the local committee, cooiistingot athletic and aportin* events. lion will also be beld on the pier lor the boys who have returned from daring the war, and both afternoon and evening will be gi.en-over to _ rendering of the most anspiciout Fourth of July ctlebrsUon ever given in this city. In addit'onHo this, a band will provide caoaic in the afternoon and evening and dcring the fireworks and which will also be the beginning ot the musical concerts to be held boring the

miner season.

There will be the movies at the pier theatre, and toe amusement places the boardwalk will be opened and ready to entertain the visitors to the city. The children's dancing class on the pier began last Thursday, under toe instruction of Professor T. Farrell, and despite the inclement weather was well attended, as was the class Saturday morning. Hereafter, the classes will be conducted on that roomin g only. The inclement weather of the part of last week, kept many people from coming down over yj* week-end, and consequently the boardwalk was deserted except around the piar and ~ amusement. The very str wind made it uncomfortable and most impossible for any oqe to walk on Marine Place, and only thorn protected by atom coats and hats coo Id ventnre, 0 did were repaid by the bea otifnl sight o( the high seas dashing np against the piling!*nd storm walls, especially at toe upper end of the walk, above toe lighthouse. Here, at any time dnring high tide ie it alwaye a interesting sight, as Die water washes np higher than at an point along the beach. A sign of anticipation of the anrimer crowds, are toe life preaervers banging at places along the boardwalk ready for any emergencies that osaally follow foolhardy venturer in th" surf, and which could be avoided.

Independence Day

Tbe pier theatre is keeping np its floe quality of pictnres, and toe product on of Uiem hat been very good. A r*ried program is shown daring the week, with a good comedy preceding toe main picture. Hie theatre was ae'.l patronised daring the week and the anditoom beld a regular niid-aaininer crowd. Although the bad weather k-pt many fishermen o0 the end »' the pier, there are always some who esn't resist the lore of toe rod hnd line, and they are the real rnthnaiastie ones, who defied the elements and dropped their line over into the violent whirl of water. After futile attempts, they reeled np and went home with a sigh. A comical thing and one that made tbe fishermen most envious, on Friday evening, was a sea gall awoop dow and dip his talons into the water and pall ap a large aised fish. As he tlrw the end of the pier, it looked as though be winked his eye in derision, sport -emarked, "Gosh! he's got one on as, he needs neitlier book, line or bah." It was too moeh for him, be bad been waiting all day (or a single

bite.

.lost at toe people were begii to promenade on Tuesday evening, toe fire whistle blew and everybody ran to scene of the trouble, which was a in a small shack in back of tor Kxcurmion house. Jt was a chance h toe uumbei ot visitors in tbe city, aud the season has started In good earnest. The boardwalk it filling np and by toe fourth of July will be crowded. The hotels are all open, and many gorru here for the whole season. The rough water prevented many (rum taking their daily bath iu the suif, so there was much eniertaiiing in toe cutlags* until the storms subsided, which' was well towards tbe end of the week. Tbe bathing ie becoming more popular every day as tire season advances, and toe beach is well filled daring the

boor.

Today is Indcjretidencc Day As a nation we glory in it Our ualional slrenght, our national resources, the unlimited possibilities of our national existence^ppeal to us with greater significance on Independence

Upon this great anniversary of national lejoicing we renew our confidence to meet the problrfus of the years to come.
