The Ocean City Music Question Over in;Ocean City there is a first-class boycott against the music this year, because the City Commissioners have seen fit to charge a nominal admission price to help defray the costs of the hand and orchestra employed for the season. . The Commission os contend that the burden of taxation to maintain these daily concerts for the free enjoyment of the public is becoming too heavy to be borne entirely by taxation, and that it is only fair and proper that the music lovers who visit the resort should pay admission to concerts. The public contend that the concerts haw always been free, and that the understanding when the bond issue to build the new pavilion was voted upon that the {arilion and Concerts were to be maintained at public expense, and, that the tax levies had been paid by the property owners, who should now be admitted to enjoy the

music without additional cost.

And the Ocean City people are hacking np their objections, from all reports, with a systematic boycott of the concerts, so that frequentiy there is only a baker’s dozen in the pavilion, built to

seat a thousand or more.

There is merit to both sides of the Ocean City music controversy, but a d ; ^interested person must concede that the balance hangs in favor of the Commissioners. At no other resort (with the exception of the semi-weekly concerts at Sea Isle City) is music fhanished without charge. Wildwood, for instance, with its municipal convention hall, a charge is made. Atlantic City has no municipally-owned music pavilion, and no muuidpally-owued band, hence cannot figure in the comparison; but at Asbury Park the same condition prevails as in the lower Cape May Count) resorts. The cost of good music, for a season’s engagement, amounts to staggering figures, and if the tax rate in a seashore resort is to be kept down to a figure that will encourrge building and real estate ownership, some revenue must be derived from the concerts to at

least help defray their cost.

It is not to be assumed, ever, were the Ocean City concerts well patronized, that the receipts would balance the cost. It is impossible to furnish high-priced musical talent for a fifteen-ccot admission charge. But every dollar taken in from these small admission fees means a dollar less to be raised by taxation; or a dollar more for needed municipal improvements. Another view that the Ocean City taxpayers would do well to adopt is that the visiting public, here today and away tomorrow, are the ones who most patron.^ the free concerts when they are free, and the person who owns a projjcrt-' and is taxed to defray the cost of music pay* for the other fcllew’s free enjoyment—not an

altogether fair arrangement.

The day of free music at the seashore resort is practically ceded. Ocean City is among the last, furnishing daily high clam concerts, to get into the pay class ; a wise move if viewed without bias.
