Neglecting the Country Prett Two vicious jabs have been made at country newspapers by the Administration recently, which aie creating no end of protest* and which the Republican Congress will oppose to the limit of its
ability.
One is the absurd order of Postmaster General Burleson making it mandatory that country newspapers mailed out to subscribers shall be wrapped in pink paper, and the other is the relusal of the War and Navy Departments to advertise in country newspapers for recruits, while the advertising columns of the big metropolitan dailies are generously supplied with this sort of advertising. Protesting against the Burleson order, many country editors declare that it results in a heavy expense to them at a time when costs must be pared'to the last fraction of a cent on account of the large increase in the price of print paper, ink, labor, etc These small papers effect a saving which in the course of tbe year amounts to considerable, by utilizing their old editions for. wrappers. This custom has been followed ever since the country press made use of the mails, and Burleson is the first man to find fault with it The purchase of pink paper fox wrapping purposes entails a big expense and is without shadow of excuse. It also means a large waste of material—the paper stock consumed by the old editions, and the pink wrapping paper for which no other use can be assigned. Just why pink is demanded, instead of baby blue, does not appear, the latter being the color of idealists. Of course this order is all of a piece with the infernal propensity ol the Administration to reform aud lieddle with the affairs of the individual Congress will take a whack at the order very soon. With respect to advertising for recruits, it is submitted that the refusal of the War and Navy Departments to make use of the -coL utmis of the country press, while thousands of dollars are paid to tie metropolitan press, is favoritism of the rankest sort, besides being wholly inconsistent with what the Administration is attempting to do, namely, to secure the best brawn, brarn and sinew* of the country for the service, and that comes quite largely from the rural districts. The real reason for this refusal to advertise in the country press is said to be the wholesale freedom of expression in which rural editors have iudulged at the expense of the Administration. For this they are to be figurative!) birched by the pedagogue under whose complete control of the thousands of bureaucrats function. Mr. Wilson holds to the view that any reservation the Senate uttjr make in the pease treaty must be acceptable to the allies, aud those wh-_ have talked with him say that the plain inference of his remarks was that if amendments to th# treaty are mode he will submit them to the foreign governments, aud attempt to charge the delay incident to such negotiations to those Scut.tors who sought to amend. If that is a correct interpretation of the President’s mind, and he undertakes to carry out such a program, he will lay himself open to grave charges that may well invoke the power of impeach-
ment possessed by the House of Representatives.
Mr. Wilsou must berfr in mind that no foreign government >s a pail of the treaty-making power of the United States. The enemies ol Germany gathered together for mutual counsel in the framing of a treaty. Those nations that had entered into a previous agreement not to sign a separate peace were bou’id to take joint j
action with each other, but the United States has always been free i u * r bul 11 "' or * u " . , , , . , tint lu> i* aliil vraKi'-t lor hit Hot bin to act independently. On the twenty-aeoond ol this month, a dance will b# given in the Caaino lor tba benefit of the Lite Gnarda. K,ie not generrlly known that three of three roong men give’their service* to the city without any compensation, excepting through the receipt* from fairs, and as the resident* and riaiGra of 8da Isle Oily arc the onea who receire the benefit, and (eel eafer bathing, knowing Uiat on the beach are five efficient jinards, ready to do their dnty when called opon, everyone aboald do their part in making it a great ancceaa. So far, this city ha* had no drowning caaea, although four reeooea have been made, and hot for the watchfulness of the gnard* would undoubt-

Much credit it due the manager of the Pier Theatre for hi* generosity in giving the public such a splendid picture a* ■hown tail Thnreday at s epeciai matinee and in the evening. Coniidpring that it wa* positively the tint presentation of it in America, the Sea Isle City people have been the recipients of a treat not nsuallv given by movie theatre managers, especially of pictures that are made on each a mrgnificeot scale and without an Increase in the price of admission. The mechanical production of it and the musical acco-e-paniment were In keeping with every detail of the picture. Undoubtedly 'Colonel Brideau" was the finest picare shown so far this rammer at this theatre. But every evening one can go and be rare of seeing a first claaa and pleasing picture and a good comedy. The placid waters of tha ocean of the past few days have reminded one of a large calm lake, and with the canoes and amall boats skimming over its ripples, one could imagine they were in the region of the Great Lakes. Kspeciallr at night has it been a grand eight with the moon beam* reflecting over the water, and srith it the high tide dashing ■e wave* up close to the boardwalk. The rubbish receptacles placed at the inteneetion of the boardwalk and the principal streets are a great innovation and ought certainly help to rid promenade of all discarded papers and refuse. Lest Saturday evening one of the largest crowds this season thus j, thronged the boardwalk. Ideal weather, and the gay holiday spirit seemed to cause everybody to joy themselves, and many happy smile* were seen on the face* of the people who trotted along the walk. Until alter

They still continue to give great pleasure to the large crowd of people ible at this point every Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The program is klway- . very good and is composed ol sentimental airs as well as the more catchy strains from the popular music of the day, and which nrr very well rendered. Many requaei* are made which are cbeerfdtiy granted by the conduotor, and judging by tl« pro pie who congregate at Ibla point during the concert, U is the most popular part ol Marine Place. Hie extra concert given on last Wednesday evening, was the first this season, and will continue through the present month. Many couples umk advantage of the dance eejections played and made an improrapt# ball room of
