A County Memorial
The efforts of the Cape May County Board of freeholders to ild a suitable memorial for the service boys, is a highly commende one, and merits the complete and hearty support of every resi-
nt of the County.
It is particularly gratifying that this memorial is to take form : in the building of a Hospital for the County. No more suitable or lore necessary institution could be thought of than a public Hospital maintained by the County, and it is to be hoped that this norial institution will soon become a reality. The County now appropriates six thousand dollars a year for ipital purposes, and usually adds another thousand or so from r fond. This money goes, largely, to outside institutions ten the same amount would almost maintain, with the receipts of ay patients, a county hospital with greatly increased facilities for ■ring for om sick. Then, too, the County has grown to the point rhere a County institution is an absomte necessity to properly care or the sick, and especially the emergency ras<»c that need iuimedite and expert medical attention. Its completion would be a perpetual testimonial to the valor ad heroism of Cape May County sons, and to the enterprise and lr-fiightedr.ess -these inen who now compose the County’s chief
xecutivc bouy.
Before tfaia paper went to fcreee laat week, the beautital calm nee* and placidity of the ocean that the writer of Uiif column raved over, very euddenly chanced over night and became a Niagara whirlpool rapide in short notice. Old Jupiter Flnviua pat one over on her bat it gave tb? people aomeUiing to entertain them, and to many wai a sight never to be forgotten. The day after the atorm, the boardwalk was thronged and all anvioui to eee the amount of destruction done, but (ortonately it did not laat long enough to do much material damage. The aecUon of the walk up above the Light Hotue, which only laid three weeu ago, waa wa entirely away. Thia part of the walk waa f. much needed convenience to upper Sea Isle. Many will go home irabv the eight of the dashing waters and the lashing of the waves np against the pilings and atorm walla and a more beantifnl night could acaroely be pictured. Hereafter, the writer of thia column wilMiave to consult the bureau a few days ahead, for (be weather has proved that it is not to be relied upon. Although the summer eeaeon is at fu height and considering the number of people who have visited this city, and the boardwalk is always thronged, arrest has been made d.iring the summer on Marine Pla-e. Much credit is due the Chief of Police for his vigilenoe and efficient sen ice. Tbe city jaij hi been empty all summer, which speaks well for tbe morals of Sea Isle City. The baby parade will take place the twenty seventh, and will be formed on the boardwalk oppoaite tbe Civic Club House. It is every mother's duty to have her young innocent lake part in this affair, and the married ones that have none of their own, should borrow oue for tbe occasion. Nothing creates more interest than these kiddie parades and Chare should be nothing lacking in this out, judging from the very pretty babies seen on the boi^dwalk every
day.
Won't somebody take pity on the poor thermm and go out and drive in some sort of fish from the deep waters? It is something approaching a calamity for these enthusiasts to go ont day after dsy, sad not catch anything worth while. Tbe strain is beginning to tell on them, and next to standing in a line to get a ticket for a base ball game, there is
Groping in the Dark
President Wilson coi. inues bis failure to comply with the
laests of the Senate for documents relating to the league and ice treaty. Colonel House the confident of the President, is in
igland and shows no sign of an early return to this country
Secretary Lansing is unable to idled much light on the proceedings n Paris, stating that they were direc'-ed and the records kept by lr. Wilson alone. Messrs. Bliss an>i White ore in the same helpless sndition as the Seerelan of Statr. The Committee on Foreign delations is reduced to the necemty of groping in the dark in its »rck for information. Deni'jd access to the members of the Ameram commission actually ui touch with tbe negotiations, the comlittee is compelled to rely on such fragments of evidence as it can ctract from various attaclies and hangers-on of the neace conference
’ho happen to be in this country nt tbe present time.
Spine '-n Diplomacy
Early in the peace negotiations at Paris, we wi.e told that the ritish were insistent that they should retain supremacy of the seas, gardlcss of what the leagut of nations might say. From the ioment of that firm stand by Great Britian, the subject of freedom F the seas was never taken up by the conference, so far as Secretary •using is aware. Wljy could we not have had an American at aris with, sufficient courage to insist that our Momoe Doctrine, pestious of immigration, tarifl, and coastwise trade, and the right lerent in our Congress to make war only when it chose to do so, Should be excepted from any interference by the league of nations?
President Wilson has cabled to Premier Clemanccau asking him to make public tbe minutes of tbe league of nations commission. Doubtless that action is to forestall any attempt by tbe Foieign Kelaions Committee to obtain from French sources what they are denied
our President.
