dusiriously circulating stories designed, whether effective or not, to do me irreparable injury among the patriotic citizens of this county; charging me with a flat refusal to buy Liberty Bonds, and with other equally unpatriotic acts during the war, I cannot permit these lies to go unchallenged. As secretary of the County Board, no small part of that body’s work fell to my lot, aad I am willing to leave it to my fellow members, Sheriff Miller and Doctor John S. Douglass to Say' whether I ever for one instant failed to do my duty, my full duty and in many instances more than my duty, freely, without pay and without desire for pay; Thus bearing my share in the work that all patriotic Red Blooded Americans

were glad to perform for their country.

The following certificate will, I think, finally

dispose of the lie regarding bonds:

A. CARLTON HILDRETH.

Alfred Cooper, of full age, being duly sworn, on his oath says that he has examined the safe deposit box of A. Carlton Hildreth in the Court House National Bank, that among other papers the box contains ten Liberty Bonds, tht property of said Hildreth. And deponent further says that he has been shown mute evidences that these bonds were purchased at the time of issue, and paid for by money drawn from Mr. Hildreth’s private bank -
