Why Not a Municipal Park ? In every municipality and hamlet in the nation the popular topic today i* the erection ot memorials to the boys of the great world
war.
In most cases these memorials are taking the ionn of buildings for community use. At Wildwood, for instance, it is proposed to build a community club house, and the ground is already paid for. Why not a memorial for our Sea Isle City boys ? Certainly it js as little as any municipality can do to pay a lasting tribute to the ]ads who so valiantly sprung to arms to defend the uation’s honor, and the stalwart principles of Democracy. Sea Isle City should have a memorial, and no better one can be suggested than a municipal park to convert what is now the resort’s gTeatest|[eyesore into (a. spot of beauty—* spot that will attract visitors with its splendor rather than repel them with its ugliness. There is no spof in Sea Isle, City that is more frequently seen than the grounds adjacent to the railroad station. It is the very heart of the resort, and the hub around which all business is built, and to which all travellers, whether by train or by auto, must pass and re-pass in entering and leaving the town. And yet it must be candidly admitted that there is no place more unattractive than these very grounds. With the smelly and unsightly freight station, and the coal sheds; the weed-grown railroad siding, with its generous sprinkling of loose railroad ties and Utter of scrap paper, certainly the visitor cannot form a very favorable impression of the resort that boasts its beauty as "The Qaeen cf Seaside Resorts.’’ Why is it not practicable and entirely feasible for the City to buy the ground between Ocean Avenue and West Jersey Avenue, and convert it into a Memorial Park, with a nice lawn and pretty flower beds ? It is reasonably certain that tbe railroad company would, if the right disposition was shown by the City Commissioners, remove the freight station and tbe coal sheds to a place just as accessible, but mow out of the public view. This done, it would remain only for the city to buy the laud referred to, either by grant or condemnation, and have the Memorial Park ready for tlic summer
of 1930.
We have been pleaching municipal improvements, and civic pi ide, and yet at the very gateway U> the resort we have tolerated for years an eyesore and u public nuisance in the form of a fishsmelling freight platform. Let’s get rid of it. Ixt's make the t
surroundings beautiful.
The cost would not lie great, including ibe purchase of tbe • land, and we venture iliac U not a taxpayer on the island, uo II matter how heavily burdened, who would not submit cheerful'y to ! the slight additional increase caused by assumption of tbe cost of!
this woik. *
The Times would appreciate au expression from its readers who :j are interested in Sea Isle, and preferably fiom taxpayers, of tbrii j views on this subject It would also appreciate an expressiou fiom j) the City CummUsionets of tlteir thoughts in the matter.
