$1500 has been appropriated for Itnuslc. on tbtarather douoif^I a&sui[ance that a like amount would b* contributed by the citizens at private subscription. if the amount should be $3000--and this Is little enouBh-wby

should a few citizens .-boulder

burden of the other $1500 when all the taxpayers and visitors of the resort benefit by the public band concerts?

ist have a band, the laxpay

must be the one* to pay for it—not the few public-spirited citizens who

are already heavily burdened.

Another .tern that ha* been left out of this year’s appropriation is the hmount needed to publish the monthly reports of the City Commissioners, a thine that the law requires, and* to which the taxpayers are entitled. And

•hicb has never been done

It is commendable that the Commisloners are endeavoring to hold down >e tax ran . And it is noteworthy that there were a worried set of men the City Hall when the tax budget war adopted, and it was found that the

tax rate must be Increased

Taxes, however, were never held down by false .-conomy. The only remedy of overtaxation lies in increasvalues. and values will not increase until there is a substantial bullding boom. Special advertising, and other like boosting campaigns, will stimulate building, and develop the resort to the point where taxes will worry no one Ocean City, despite a h If-mlllion dollars' worth of new build ig last -, must increase its tax rate. Likewise Wildwood, and also Cape May. Why, the n, should the Sea Isle CommlsUonerr hold back on the very things the resort needs most, in order

to hold down taxes?

A commendable objective, bnt Ilk*

wise a foolish one.

MISDIRECTED ECONOMY.

The City Commissioners of Sea Isle City ere to he congratulat'd on their program of economy, which has enabled them to bold down the tax budget to a very slight increase over last year.
