To thoae who know only the modern Wildwo-id, with lu mile* of fine pared atreota, ita four mile* of boardwalk. and 1U pier*, theatres and cburehes, it may aeem atrange that It originally derived its happily chosen name by reason of the fact that the island was a real "wild ~ood." Aa late as 18fc6 whan the Baker Brothers, Latimer and Philip, and the late J. Thompson, first founded the resort that now is one of the finest and most up-to-date along the Atlantic Coast, the chief attraction of the place w_& thought to be iu .plenaid forests, and to make capital of this, artificial lakes were crested, and the woodland resort was advertised. Ax It grew, the handsome old oaks and stately pines were cut down and gave way to modern streets, cottage* and hotels. Today, as is well kno*- n though the name Wildwood Is no popular than ever, and Is constantly growing in favor, the wood* have entirely disappeared. The growth and development anu the rise In real eetate value* of Wildwood, and lu sister reaoru. especially Wildwood Crest, baa been most phenomenal. In 1906, only 14 year* ago, the entire borough of Wildwood Creel had an assessed valuation of $1,600, on which the munificent sum of $33 tax was paid. Last year the assessed value of the Crest was nearly two million dollars, and the State and county lax paid by the borough alone was $17,000, while the total tax levy was nearly $4 5,000.
