Regaining health, be enlisted in the regular army as a private in the Four teenth Infantry in 1865, and by May ol had been promoted through the successive grades to First Lieutenanu He was promoted lo Captain tc 1874. During his service in the West he took part in operations against th* Indians in Montana, Idaho, Oregon and He served on general recruiting duly from 1868 to 1869. 1892, he was retired with the rank ol Captain, being at that time stnUotcd at Vancouver Barracks, Washington. is given the rank ol Major in 1904. He was many times cited in ordera. Since his reUrement he and Mrs. Tobey had lived in Washington, D. C. Mrs. Tobey is the daughter ol Col. C. W. Wingcrd, c. S. A.
