A FAR-SIGHTED MOVE. The City Commissioners of Sea Isle City, In their action last week in formally taking possesion of the local gas plant, under the lease with the Receiver. deserve the coniendation of every resident and visitor to the resort. The uninterrupted supply of gas for the season at least, is of vital necessity to the city, and unless the Cominisaioners had taken over the plaCt. it is very doubtful if the service would have been given, or If It were given, the return of the deposit to consumers was probk-roqUcal. It has been tinderstood by Hie best authority that the operator of the plant was using this deposit money for the current expenses and there was no way of knowing where the money to repay the deposits was to come front. The action of the city was to protect consumers against loss of their deposits, and m insure the operation of the plant, so that there would be gas at all times. Sea Isle City's gas situation has been in a muddle for the past five years. One receivership was followed by another, and in the last case the receiver of the plant, in his interest in having it operated, secured from the court permission to lease the pV nt. for a very nominal sum, to the city, and the city In turn leased It to the American Gas Generator Company, ol which a Mr. Friars, of Philadelphia, wrs the head. The plant was operated by this concern last summer, and in the fall there was trouble for many of the consumen. to get their deposits returned. Later In the winter the plant was shut down for repairs, the repairs we.-e made and the company re-named the Friars Gas Company, and operation commenced again in May. Since that time the plant lias beei, run from hand-to-mouth in the matter of coal and supplies, there often being only u few hours supply on hand Then it was learned that the money put up by depositor!, was being used for the expenses of operation of the plant, and here the City Commissioners, very wisely intervened, and took possession of '.be property . The action was a progressive one. and one that speakt well for the comtuiwioners’ Interest in the city’s welfare. The next step should be the outright purchase of the plant by the City, and Its tw**!ve-month-ln-the-year operation as a juunUlpally owned public utility. TURNS AGAINST SUFFRAGE.
