The taxptyers of Ses Isle City wsnt the city to own the tleclrtv light company, the water works and gne plant, and waul all three to he operated under public ownership, according to peliticiu now being liberally sign-d lot the mun-
icipal purchase of all three.
The law requites flat the City autboritua be petition'u w lien public utilities are to be bought, and. then an election on the question is mandatory. If this election is carried by a majority of Uie voters, a commission is appointed to appraise the plants of Uie various utility companies, and the city may then purchase them at the valuation
fixed by the commiaeion.
No reasons is set forth in Uie petitions j why the city should own the plants, brt those circulating Uicm are etaling . that it. Uie case of the electric, company ! municipal owuemhi,, would be all day .current at lower than present rates and I a saving in the City of something over ' $MKX) a year in strwvt lighting; Uie water works would mean much ’ower rates anu the saving of abonl $2000 to Uie city for fire service every year; and the gas plant would mean acesaiUon for all lime instead of Uie present miserable, rotten service and mismansgemenl. When,-after a lapse of perhaps five minutes, h« heard a Butte.ing aud caught a glimpse of the supposed Bounder t oing through the air and gack into the water, apparently none the worse irem having been captured. Mr. Gandy now believes U was some specie ot Hying fish." TEACHER SHORTAGE HITS COUNTY. .ariou* reasons Cape May - County has been loriunato during the tsi two years in maintaining it* school* at lull su- ngih. A chief one of these is that in most of our district supervising officer- have been on the alert to discover proper persons to fill the vacancies aud nave no. permitted their opportunities to c*cape. This : ear. however, the difficulty of obtaining ptoper teachers ha* reached is zenith. They are not available in such numbers as are required and cannot be persuaded excepting by the payment of such salaries as will permit them to live. District* which refuse to recognize this fact do not and cannot obtain teacheis. Under similar conditions they could not obtain doctors, lawyer*, teamsters or mechanics. 1 eacbers who used to be capable of living on nothing, largely because their f. allies' aided in their support can do it no more and do not find It necessary because their services are in demand a* never before. We still have with us, however, districts In which the people have come to no realisation of this and are atill inclined to indulge in the old-fashioned eport of baiting the teacher and rendering her position Impossible of endurance, incidentally destroying the usefulness of the school from the ctandpolnt of the children, and yet to be obsessed with tbe idea that there are those Willing to stand these delectable' conditions for the pleasure of living in such enlightened communities and with suc h amiable people and at a price less than that paid by any other com-
munity.
