INDICTMENTS DO NOT PROVE GUILT It would lie well for those who convinced that the Cape May Ot Board ot Freeholders, and many i ,01 the count} 'n hitherto most respected . cltlaens, are all crooks and should Jailed, that Indictments do not prove Built, and that the Indicted, or accused. Is Innocent until proven £u!liy—and the burden of proof Is on the Stale. Anyone, no matter how Innocent of any wilful crime might be Indicted. The Grand Jury la Blven only- one sld< of a case, and from the evidence thus submitted makes Us presentment, proof that the accused really has < milted Hue crime for which he Is dieted, must be furnished by the cuser in open court, and It must i-r proof "beyond a reasonable doubt"—to quote the lanKuage of the law. Many persons—yes. by far the vast majority of persons—look upon an Indictment of a person us positive evidence of his Built, and are prejudiced ngir -'I the indicted one. This Is not Just, and stiould not lie. An indicted person is Just as honorable and Just as much entitled to the respect of his fellow-man as one who is not accused—until he is proven guilty. And this Is the work of the legally constituted courts, and not the court of public opinion. Let us, ulKive all, be fair, and without prejudice or malice bear with the conditions as they are until such time os the courts have acted.
