The Injustice of this lies in the fact that Essex and Hudson counties were obliged (o pay state taxes at a much higher ratio than other counties in New Jersey. It didn't make any difference in regard to local Ux or county tax but It made a mighty

Anybody can see that this lent right and equita'ble and the legists- ] ture very properly passed a law giv-

The Morris county committee found out some other things. They found that in some taxing districts in various counties, there was a wide difference in *he method of ment. There was only one county where the assessors seemed to be doing the thing systematically and that was in Sussex. Here they found but little variation. Taking the counties as a unit, they learned that Hudson was paying the highest ratio, about 69 per cent, of the true valuation. Bergen was paying the lowest, about 50 per cent, of the true value. Essex

was paying 67.

The real situation seems to be, according to a rather exhaustive Investigation that the TIMES has made, that the assessors have all got “cold feet.” They are not enforcing the order to the letter. Some of them are doing It In a half-hearted way but more of them are ignoring the order and putting down the figures that prevailed this rear and last year and many years before. Some of them are simply duplicating the figures on the old books.
