Why Close The Ocean City Boardwalk
In a number of every day curb chats, a representative of the TIMES has been asked the question— Why close the Ocean City BoardWalk for the winter months, tally in view of the fact that there la an ever increasing number of out-of-town people who visit the city during the week and on Sundays and
holidays 7
To back up the theory of keeping the shore attraction of the city in tetlvlty when the winter weather is cold, many well known and substantial cltlsens of Ocean City have advanced the idea that untold advertiaing, at very little cost to the city, will be derived frotn keeping every boardwalk light lit at night, and of encouraging shop owners and keepers to remain in business throughout
the winter.
It appears, these cltixens say. that the subject presents a chance for education. and that the desired results Will be obtained only after the baach-eeeking public awakens to a realisation that pleasure may be found at Ocean City every day In the pear, whereas other cities are active only during the summer. The state law preventing the operation of boardwalk shops and establishments on Sunday, probably would be enforced as in summer, but city people seeking the oul-of-doors Would continue to make their respective ways to Ocean City the entire year. It is said. At present there are only a few of the boardwalk lights turned on at night, suffleient for the present heeds, but not making the city famous elsewhere. It is further stated that there are more interested people about Ocean City, day and night this year than •ver before. The city is planning an advertising campaign. The Chamber Of Commerce has declared Itself capable of raising funds which, together with those of the municipal budget. would produce results—Ocean City would be advertised on an extensive basis. To say. in this pub- ’ llcity, that the boardwalk Is never dosed, would double the present influx of Interested people, it Is said. There are manufacturing Interests flbw producing heating plants which are suitable for the numerous tner homes. Week-end trips might be enjoyed, to say nothing of living In Ocean City during the winter and dally by train to the larger cities for buslnem. Better still, bring business projects to Oeean City. The Chamber of Commerce proposes to pay a publicity expert 93000 a year for services in spreading abroad the fame of Ocean City. Will this publicity director work six or eight months for an annual salary. Or will he be on the Job the entire year with the city practically closed down for at least four months of
that time?
Atlantic City maintains a board-
walk attraction winter and suml There can be similar attractiona In Ocean City. At present the boardwalk presents the appearance of a deserted s equipped, but without crew. One lunch stand remains open dally. One theatre every other evening. "Meet us in Somewhere, Florida. Back next season." say the signs. A seaplane roared its way over the office of the TIMES, at 803 Atlantic avenue, shortly after noon last Friday. The day was wonderful. Ocean City literally bathed in warm sun shine. Cool breezes nipping the nose. With all the attributes, Ocean City is In a position to remain open every week day In the year, be advertised nationally for it and keep step with the present advance of seashore proluniclpalitiea.

Men who dared the rages of storms, men who braved horrors of the deep and men who stood at respectful attention or at "general quarters’' in wtnte'r blasts and summer heats, rain or shine. Of this type Ocean City boasts a representative in the person of Maurice U Wrigging, a city fireman, of the old time sailor variety. When but a lad of fourteen years. Later he was transferred *© the PhlUlpines for active duty and was honorably discharged from the Nhvy some several months following his foreign order. Russell Henry Poet, T. F. | W., which has an excellent group of real dram and bugle artists.
