Other County Chatty Notes By Zip Fred P. Canfield, one of the present Commissioners of the Borough of Avalon, is one of the few men that made political history In Ocean City during the uriy nineties, that still retains an active Interest in civic affairs. The majority of the men of that regime have passed beyond, other* have founu more lucratlre, If not more Interesting, pursuits. Mr. Canfield was born In Springfield. 111., and moved to Ocean City In 1886. There he was -'ected to Council In 1892. The late U. P. Moore was the Mayor. The other members of the Oounell were Jesse Conover, father of the pr went fire chief, and Jacob Steelman, the builder. It wa* In that yv«r the first real boardwalk was built in Ocean City. Joseph Hind placed the piling and "Kin*' Mcrey laid the walk for ten Cent* a lineal foot. Needless to say that wa* before carpenters received one dollar an ncur. The Boardwalk extended from what Is now Seventh street and Atlantic avenue on an angle to the Excursion Rouse, on Eleventh street. The Excursion House, which was destroyed by fire; was located In back of the lots now occupied by the Flan-
ders.
Mr. Canfield was elected Freeholder from the Fret Ward from 1897 to 1900. In 1900 the Budget for Ocean City and Cape May County were Identical—$25,000. The budget for this year for the County Is $599,772.60. In 1889, Mr. Canfield was appointed on the Commission of Appeals. The County Board of Taxation supercede*; this body. Associated with him were Peter Murdock, Sr., and his son. Jesse Murdock. ' It was Peter Murdock. 8r., who purenssed the present site of the First National in 1880. for $150.00. He sold It to the Central Trust Company, a branch cf the Camden banking concern. In 1896. for $4,000. The First National Bank -irchaaed the lot and building from the Central Trust Company In 1$02. Mr. Canfield also served as assessor and Jus'ice of the Peace. In 1004 be movol to Avalon and the following vet-- was appointed Borough Clerk. He also served as Councilman before the present form of Commission Government. Avalon Election Five candidates have filed petitions In the Commttoioner* contest at Avalon. They are the present Commissioner*. Mayor Gilbert 8. Smith. Fred P. Canfield and William H. Barron, E. B. Becker, -he former Mayor, and Learning Wenuell. the builder, son of Levi Wentxell, are the other candidates. Kot u New Fontion A nag* once remarked, “Bury not your eecrets with a woman.” For some reason the male eex agree wltb the sage and complacently believe the feminine of the species Is never heppier than when she U attracting attention to herself. However It does rot always prove so. especially polltl
cally.
Last week after Haffert was appointed Clerk of the Board of Freeholders. ths usual form of allowing the appointee to ram* the deputy was followed. He re-appolnted the old deputy, who he* served In that capacity lor several years. It happens ths deputy Is an efficient little body of the weaker eex. I was very much surprised to learn so many people were under the Impreeslou that this was a new position My surprised was not caused by tbi rank and file, but from conversing wltb peroocs who are actively la touch wltb the administrating procaas of 'he Board of Freeholder* Can you picture • man filling a po»l Hon of thl* nature tor several years and not having half the county call lag him by bis first name? It looki aa *.bough the weaker sex works un der a disadvantage. Or should I say advantage. This isn't true In all casaa I ever.
